you're sure that you use the beta 5. that was one thing that should be fixed with the new version

    Better late then never.;)

I must say this version is running very smooth. Surprised? Yeah a little bit. Love the deep colors of the umbrellas as the GUI opens.

Will they now add http scanning in the anti-virus premium this time? I really do hope so, then that's when I would buy it!:D

If they put http scanning in Premium, I will go back to the free version. That http scanning is a disaster. Robs me of all my speed that I pay a lot for. I don't use it, I don't use the email scanner, I don't need backup, I don't use the firewall....there is nothing new that I really think is great. It is just another junked up suite. I hate suites. Now, if they had implemented a great classic HIPS to replace ProcessGuard then I would be excited...but I say ho-hum to this ver.8 Suite. I still don't see the important things like support for 7zip. Nor do I see any improvement in the mediocre performance of Luke Filewalker. A great AV would not require the use of the real time scanner. One should need the on demand scanner only ...and the rest is just icing on a cake...but with Avira you dare not use just Luke Filewalker. When I had Bit Defender, I needed nothing but the on demand scanner.

You can disable the http scanning if you don't want it. Why is archive support important when programs inside them can't be executed directly? I would worry more about packer support. Also why is the on-demand not what you expect? How would you improve it?

In the beta 8, I have installed the webscanner to test it and then I have uninstalled that module because it slows me down and messes up my speed tests. I have Avira premium so, except for this beta test, I don't have the webscanner to begin with so I don't have to not install the module as it isn't a part of Premium. With the beta, I can't disable it. It runs anyway and with beta 4 uninstalling the module did not work. I had to uninstall the entire program and reinstall and decline that module on the reinstall. I don't know if it can be properly disabled in beta 5 because I haven't reinstalled the module yet to see.

I want the on demand scanner to detect better. Currently, only Guard can catch 7zip and that is scary. The on demand scanner needs to be a lot stronger so when I download a file, or get an attachment in email, and I then download to disk and scan it or the file I just downloaded from the internet, I expect the scanner to catch anything Guard would catch. I don't want to need to use Guard. I want to use just the on demand scanner but with Avira I can't do that. I would have been infected with a 7zip nasty recently if I was relying on Luke Filewalker. The nasty was packed inside zip inside another zip and Luke Filewalker at every stage of unzipping and scanning at each stage kept saying the file was clean. Only at the final moment when I got down far enough that the file went to execute and unleashed 11 temp files did Guard catch all 11. I don't like the fact that all my careful scanning was worthless and that I had to rely on Guard at the last minute. That is very scary. A strong on demand scanner should have drilled down into that on the first scan after I downloaded the file. I had to take all that time and effort and then Luke Filewalker never found the nasty. That is just one example. With Avira, you might as well not install Luke Filewalker as it is a misleading panecea. Guard does all the work so you really just need Guard. I want to just use Luke Filewalker as surfing is always faster without a real time AV.

Plus, those who do full scans on a routine basis are being misled. They see no infections. But if they have a 7zip file it may well be infected yet Luke Filewalker will tell them it is clean because of its limitations as a scanner. So, what if this person has put Guard to sleep while they were playing a game or something and since Guard has no way to warn you when it has been sleeping for awhile, and no way to set it to sleep for a certain amount of time, so say this user forgets it is asleep and decides to unzip and install that new file they downloaded yesterday and that was declared clean by Luke Filewalker when they did their daily scan this morning. This person will get infected. I detest weak on demand scanners. They are worse than no on demand scanner. I had this very same beef with Eset several years ago when they ignored beefing up the on demand scanner because they wanted a new gimmick to get more folks to buy NOD32 so their time was spent on that IMON web scanner that also crippled my speed and was unusable. They should have never had a web scanner and instead beefed up the on demand scanner.

This is my opinion and I realize most folks here disagree with this stance and that is why vendors have things like web scanners. I can't really blame Avira or Eset...the blame lies at the feet of users who want stuff that slows them down and is unnecessary instead of wanting the on demand scanner to have strong teeth and gigantic bite as the vendors tend to do whatever will sell more AV not what might be the best thing.

I have both, but spam engine much better in Avira, and uses less resources and no CPU spikes which I experienced with Eset.

Anything that deters sandbox-ee (kiddy talk) can't be all bad.

But seriously, folks - I like Avira's detection. It's already top-tier. If the new version improves it even further, then everything else is window dressing AFAIC.
