    Probably because Kaspersky has very mediocre test results in a number of empirical indices.

    You can try Dr. Web4.44/NIS2008/F-Protect6 in addition to Avira. I have licenses for all of them, and they all run about the same on my machines and do not slow down browsing at all in Firefox, Opera, or IE. There are free trials available in you have not checked them out.

    well all information about the engine where given in the "old" beta thread.
    but here are they again:
    * Completely new high speed antivirus engine
    * 10-15% better performance during file scanning
    * Lower impact on overall system performance
    * Reduced memory footprint

    here is the link to the beta test:

    no offense leo, but from the looks up the beta forum, the new one isnt even coming close to meeting those expectations you just posted.

    Maybe you should not say:

    * Completely new high speed antivirus engine
    * 10-15% better performance during file scanning
    * Lower impact on overall system performance
    * Reduced memory footprint

    If it has yet to be accomplished.:cautious:

    I guess that are Antivir's target with this release, but has yet to be done. Everything goes slower and bug appears in a beta, so all of those things may not be working quite well yet.

    Just my thought. :) But yes, they should have said these things after the beta, when they know how it will be.

    well this was before the new gui was "released"
    the engine is faster then the 7. that was my impression.
    the detection should be higher. this is something we cannot really test. but i think it will, don't think avira did a step backward with it.

    and it seems that there was a new release today. got lots of new files

    yes beta 5 is available.

    well that is good. Avira will get it right, we both know that. But making any statements before hand has proven not to be good practice.:cautious:

    They are moving quickly and I am going to jump in soon. Just wanted to wait and see a little bit.

    this forum is biased!
    never been a fan of avira, as many of you know, but dare i try the beta just for the sake of it? :)

    lol

    i usually try all the betas, just to see for myself how things are shaping up but avira is near last for me to try :D

    The emulator and the new generic signatures are already implemented?

    the av8 should be at the same detection level or already above as the av7. so iwould say new detections are in.

    Ok, I did not try beta 4, so beta 5 is my first shot at it. And it doesnt look like Kaspersky 6.:mad:

    Install was flawless, but that is what you expect from Avira. Everything is laid out great and web scanning for me was very fast. And that is with Sandboxie installed. It isnt so much as the guts are different, but yes, improved. The GUI has a few things I would like changed but damn, all I can say is I have run it through the grider this afternoon and it hasnt burbed once. Avira, you just never cease to amaze me.:) :thumb:

    Chris, give it a shot.

    Update.exe in the new beta 5 crashes after every manual update.
