I think the bold part explains exactly my situation.

I have noticed same behavior when I open My Documents folder and there is a suspicious exe file. There is an automatic detection although the file has not run. I haven't even thought that the cause is the OS trying to display an icon from the binary.

In Avira Free, automatic actions on detection are only available in on-demand scan. The guard component requires user interaction.

I suppose that Avira's top performance in most tests can only confirm this statistical result! (tongue in cheek - I don't like yellow).

If you have a folder with sound files you should be able to do a search thru Avira for that folder and pick the sound of your choice. I use a French Police siren myself (the 2 tone siren)...

I run Avira Premium. In the GUI I went to the sounds area and clicked the search button to go to my sounds folder, chose what I wanted and clicked apply to save it.
