I bought my 2 daughters 2 Toshiba laptops.Nearly the same but one is coreduo and the other is core2duo_Operating systems are 32 bit windows Vista Premium.Antivir free works on coreduo but does not work on core2duo.The update tab does not function.Does anyone have the same problem with avira on core2duo?

I don't think the problem it's related to the core2duo processor.
About your issue, do you mean that nothing happens when you click on 'start update'? try first reparing/reinstalling avira through 'uninstall or change a program' (located within ControlPanel). If this doesn't work, try the workaround described here.

That Avira KB article that Macstorm posted is your best bet, I had exactly the same problem, and that registry patch fixed it in less than a second :)
