Avira effectiveness seems to be waning. Especially when it comes to testing with real-world tests, not the "scan 1 million files in a folder test". See http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart2.php

I think there are better products you can spend your hard-earned money on. I think there AVIRA was good a couple of years ago. Now there are better options.

I've posted the link to the top contenders. I would encourage you not to look at just that one review, look at the last few from AV-C, Av-Test. Then try a few and pick one you like.

I am going to have to disagree on this. This is one test, every AV is not going to be perfect in every test. One test can not measure if an AV is doing is good or bad. If we all changed AVs based on one test think of how many times we would be changing security software.

Well, Norton is best in many, except On demand ones :)

It is convenient and quite frankly pathetic to attack Avira using the results of one test in conjunction with a ridiculous thread title. Perhaps you ought to wait until the whole dynamic test is over before you state your conclusions.

Avira was excellent a couple of years ago in 2008-2009-2010. It is premature to talk about 2011.

If this is an "epic fail " than i guess i have seen a lot of AV epic fails on different computers with different AV installed.
Just to mention some besides Avira.. Avast!, Nod, Norton, Kaspersky, Bitdefender...
But there is no AV that can protect you 100%, and if you are a "smart" pc-user.. than nothing can protect you.
Recently my friend asked me to fix/speed-up his slow pc, and he said that he scanned it with Avast, and that there are no viruses etc..
I start the pc and Avast is "sleeping", no warnings.. i scan with it and "nothing suspicious".
But then i scanned with Malwarebytes, emsisoft emergency kit, SuperAntiSpyware.. and they all screamed " infected!!!! " , and thy helped "fixing" the pc.
So, was this an epic fail of Avast! o_O?
No, it wasn't, its just an example that you should use different tools for different things.

Ibrad, It is not 1 test that shows Norton as one of the best. It was 4 tests 1 month each in 2010 and now this is either test 1 or if you read the URL it could be test 2 for 2011.

In 2010 the AV-Comparatives Whole Dynamic test was won by F-Secure, and Norton was #2. How it was #2 I don't get. It had less compromises then any other AV in the 2010 test that is a real world test of AV using ALL of their resources to stave off compromise. Norton's cloud will making them #1 in 2011.

He used an unnecessarily sensationalist and misleading topic title.

Yes, it is by default. But the OP did not share his settings and just went on to rant on the epic fail. Guys here are ready to help(some are waiting that he post his settings) so whatever needs be adjusted or tweak or shared have been possible.

Just assumed that it was off on his setup since he/she didn't seem to even know about it.
