    Avira uses it's own engines...not Kaspersky's.

Maybe you were thinking of G-Data AntiVirusKit which uses Kaspersky/Avast.

Avira never had anything to do with Kaspersky.

Avira updates on an average of 5 times a day. You can set it to check every hour for updates. You just need to set up a new "job" and tell it to check hourly. You can set to do it silently too which means no popup but if you do that once a day you should open the GUI and make sure the job has not become corrupted. I had that happen once and didn't know for about 5 days. I thought it was updating all that time.

There are many ways to circumvent the notifier, just check the forum for prior posts on it. It varies depending on which OS you're using etc...

The notifier isn't working today. I got some message from Avira about how it couldn't show me what I should be buying...and I was going "huh"? for a moment until I realized the ad was not working today. (I have the free version on my virtual machine at the moment because that is where I was working with gav1577's nasty).

the updates are not regular. New Definitionsfiels are uploaded when new malware is available to detect.

[UQOTe]and doesn't Avria antivirus use the Kaspersky engine? so it would have the signatures plus there own?[/QUOTE]NO! Avira uses its own engine

edit: oh was already answered didn't saw the second page ;)

No need to go to configuration. :)
Just open Avira's control center and click the Firewall tab at the top.
You will see a horizontal slider - move it to high.

It is not Avria. It is Avira.

    Re: Avria Antivirus

Ports 0 & 1 are not stealthed (they are closed) even with the Avira firewall setting on high. Refer to link below for discussion.

If you use Gibson's Research's Shield's Up test, you will discover as noted above that the first two ports are closed but not stealthed even if the Avira firewall is set to high. Some alleged gurus say this is unimportant including Avira's, but it is important to me and many others. If you want all of your ports in stealth mode, you must compose the rule created by Avira and add it to your firewall.

    Re: Avria Antivirus

Running a 3mth trial started yesterday, not likely to last much longer either.

Avira only does daily upgrades  My next one is due 24hrs after I ran upload at 22:50, I don't even know whether it will upload a scan tomorrow morning if the PC is off.

Avira scan is CPU hungary:( How can some software being scanned demand 96% cpu and others 4%, Avira doesn't even offset any private memory, so the scan slows everything else down.

Avira is cheap  and it shows.

    All my opinion of course

Yep, stay away from Avira and Avast, both are el cheapo, junk, garbage, get KAV or better, Dr. Web ;) Dunno why AV Comparatives rate it so high.

Btw, with Avira's scheduler, you can decrease the intervals for the updates but in any case, you don't want to be with a cheap AV anyways.

    Re: Avria Antivirus

Kaspersky has to. They rely 99 percent on signatures. Avira, like Eset and others know theeir heuristic detection will catch just about all. If a push was needed they all can send out an update right then. Two things, if it is so cheap, why in just about all tests is it rated so high, and based on the comments by IBK saying the test at the end of this month, you will see more false positives from signatures added then ever before. Kav is very good, but frequency of updates has to be looked at based on the type of antivirus product and it means of detection.

Decisions, leaving KAV out of the equation then, it will be down to a matter of personal choice. However I would like updates to be automatic, rather than scheduled., Heuristics may catch everything, but the reassurance of an automatic update is far better imo

Again, it is a individuals choice and you cant go wrong with Avira, Kav, or Dr.Web. But even with updates, heuristics, signatures, you better add some more because there is still a hole to allow nasties in. ;)

Updates are automatic. I have Avira set to check every hour. Out of 24 daily AUTOMATIC checks, Avira updates on the average of 5 times a day.

I agree. I have it set to update every 59 minutes and have averaged about 5 per day. It updates more than NOD32 as well that averages fewer updates per day (about 3).

    Re: Avria Antivirus

i agree i see around 4-5 updates per day.. notbad but if you want it to update more than once every 24hrs you need to set a new task for that in the schedular. otherwise it is on default to every 24hrs.
