    Thanks trjam,

It must be "growing pains" with the new version. Hopefully things will get straightened out soon. At least Avira is stable and the update went fine on my rig.

Hmmm, this is very weird... I might try installing a different browser much later today and see if it makes any difference.

Whether a clean install is needed or the automatic update from 7 works seems to be hit or miss. Webguard seemed to work better in Firefox in XP than Vista. It also seemed that Webguard would not work in Vista without installing Mailguard as well.

Its not perfect, but its a lot better than a recent version 8 release from someone else.

Does anyone know if the free version does not detect all types of spyware?

He is just saying he has Opera sandboxed. It does not have its own. Also now that I can check, my web guard is working fine. Yes the numbers go up each time I click a link, web page or even go back. And this is Sandboxed. :thumb:

Perhaps those with Avira Issues should post the operating system being used. A quick poll of my friends showed none with problems, but then they all use either XP or 2008 Server (as desktop).

Perhaps it's a Vista bug? Wouldn't be the first.

OT about Vista- I went a couple of weeks ago to the Windows 2008 dog and pony show, and in the swag bag that was given out were fully licensed copies of Vista Ultimate. Guess Microsoft saw the surveys that had less than 20% of IT folks having any intention of using Vista anywhere.

But 2008 Server rocks as a desktop OS.

Windows IS flawless. It's the customers that can't get it right. Just ask Bill and Steve. :D

There is definitely something wrong with Webguard when using Firefox in Vista. Try clicking on eicar.com.txt at the Eicar site. The behavior is the same for IE7 in Vista, IE6 in XP and Firefox in XP. The item is stopped by Webguard and the browser displays a message.

In Vista with Firefox the file is displayed as text by the browser and Webguard does nothing.

    Its something worth looking into.

    Not for me; I get

"Access to the data has been denied!

Warning: A virus or unwanted program has been found in the HTTP Data.

    Requested URL: http://www.eicar.org/download/eicar.com

Generated by AntiVir WebGuard 8.0.13.0, AVE 8.1.0.30, VDF 7.0.3.175"

As it is supposed to be.

I posted this in Avira forums earlier today, but they are understandably
    rather busy.

For those of you testing Eicar and Webguard, the problem is with eicar.com.txt, not eicar.com. It is only with Firefox under vista and only on a regular left click. A right click on the eicar.com.txt file does produce a warning, but without the message in the browser, still not exactly the way it should be.

There does not appear to be a problem with IE6 - XP, IE7 - Vista or Firefox under XP. From the posts above, it seems some of you are trying different things from what I did.

The other thing I noticed is the Commit Charge in XP goes up about 45 MB when Webguard is installed. Perhaps I should not worry as I have 2 Gigs, but I wonder where that memory is going.

Diver: can't confirm using Vista and firefox, clear your cache and try again. Maybe you'Ve got it in your cache, that way it will of course not pass through the webguard proxy. If properly configured, your guard will take care of it then (allfiles scan).

Also if you chose "ignore", the eicar.com.txt will end up in your cache, subsequent access will then not be covered by webguard as there is no more "real" internet access. This is where the normal guard will kick in.

All I know is it works with me with Vista and IE7. Iminimize web guard, click on my space or any other site, and as soon as I click on it and bring web guard up, it is showing the last scanned URL which is the site I am on.
