AV's usually uses more when updating. Or sometype of start-up scan perhaps.

Im watching this thread. Trying to figure out from testing of my own and reading experiences here as to which is lighter and has better detection. Avira or Avast.

My experience on a desktop and laptop are that Avira wins on both counts. But some report otherwise. Guess it just depends on each individual's machine.

Avira Free may have better detection, but Avast Free definitely has better protection.

Mainly because of its features such as Behaviour Shield and AutoSandbox. Other Shields provide minor protection benefits as well. Avira Free only has the File Shield.

Tried it a long time ago, so I can't comment on how good it is right now.

Thanks man. I'm just weighing out options for both at work and home as to which AV to go with on a go forward basis.

    Thanks.

Avira Premium also has Webguard, which has its own definitions and scans HTTP-traffic and can identify malware in scripts.

I have been using Avira free version lately with a free FW and honestly for the first time I have the best hassle free setup since the last seven years.

The nag screen goes with the territory when you use something for free.

I went back to testing out Avast. Did not like the nag screen. The configuration of setting up updates and scans needs to be improved as well.

I think all of that is much better in the paid version of Avira, but I agree, they could have just as easily made it better in the free product.

I've noticed something different about v10 as compared to a couple years ago: the default scheduled update job is not listed in the scheduler for whatever reason, at least for me. So while you can add further jobs as you describe, the "other" one is still run once a day or whatever it's set for in settings (expert mode). You could increase it to the maximum interval there of about 22 days (odd time), let's say if you wanted to maintain fixed/known times for your updating, but you can't disable it without the main UI telling you about it. Not really a big deal, but it's a little strange that the default job isn't in scheduler.

Yes, that's true.. I couldn't get the default scheduled daily update to work at all on a daily basis on 2 different machines here. I noticed that it would just update at boot time maybe once every 3 days. I have no idea what the problem is or was, but it doesn't work right out of the box for me. So I created a new scheduled update task in the Admin section, and that worked fine. I did also notice the default update would occur randomly about every 3 or 4 days also. In general, the whole Avira update setup in the free version is pretty sketchy IMO...

Ahhh so its better in the paid version? That's cool but still rather cheesy. At least avast updates without a hassle.

Totally agree with you. Its one of the reasons I've ditched the product.
