Okay, Panda Anti-Rootkit is recognized for being a good Anti-Rootkit scanner. It can be run occasionally when you feel something isn't right.

why don't you install superantispyware? the free and the pro both have rootkit protection. Granted the pro allows you to do scans automatically and on a scheduled time but the free does have the rootkit protection so if you do a scan least once a week it will scan for it. this way you can keep the avg free and have added protection

Please - "detection". :D I don't like it when people are mixing with the words - "protection" and "detection". :p No offence. :D

FYI. New Free Forum design. As I understand it, one has to Register anew since the Old Forum login and password will not work in the new one. Do read the new Terms & Conditions.

I guess you could use something like Threatfire with AVG free, which is suppose to prevent rootkits and it also includes a Root-kit scanner.

ance, the only info, so far, is from the Free Forums in response to a post: 8.5.374?
What's weird is that my AVG has been stuck at version 8.5.339 for awhile. I'm receiving up-to-date Virus DBs but no version update. o_O

FYI. Today, the Installation files page shows version 8.5.386 (dated June 26, 2009). The Updates page still shows version 8.5.339 (dated May 15, 2009).

The new version has not come via Normal Update yet and there's no info available as to the Fixes and/or Improvements.

May I remind everyone of Wilders' General Policy Statement - Antivirus Section and that this thread's intention is to point out details of and discuss AVG's newest Free version only, not a comparison between other AV products.

maddawgz, the 8.5 version series seems to have been straightened out and it's running great in my PC. Granted, I don't have either the LinkScanner Surf & Search Shields, and Toolbar installed, nor do I allow AVG to update itself and run start-up and/or scheduled scans on its own. So, in my case, it runs just like the old 7.5 version.

I was searching to find out more about this, here is a Review by PC Magazine:

What do you think, is it important to have the paid feature? As mentioned I'm also running Panda Anti-Rootkit now, but I don't know if it's really necessary, what do you mean?!

Yeah, I didn't remember that information - thanks for that! ;) What I wonder is, if it's capable of detecting rootkits through signatures, does that capability apply as well to its real-time protection? I would guess Matt Rizos "complained" about the technology's non-existence in the free version simply because it's proven incapable to handle rootkits that he threw at it, but I don't remember the video-review on the software - I don't remember if I saw it at all.
