A disappointment for me too on Vista 64. No more email scanning from PEN, no more Live Messenger and slow downs. Quite a shame, because the program in all looked good.

    also

when doing the eicar.com test I am finding AVG is popping up but in 7.5 it would pop up with options on what to do with the file. Here it is only popping up telling me that there is a virus through webshield but nothing of what to do with it and when opening the avg program I do not see it in Virus Vault. Why is this changed?

Can you try this and see what you get?

go to www.eicar.com and do the avg/malware test

tell me when avg pops up it says just OK and nothing is put in the virus vault.

I emailed grisoft asking them why it does it this way now

thats because its blocked it from even touching your hard drive.
so it doesnt need to put it anywhere.
    thats how a webscanner works.

I think its because WebShield prevents it from entering your computer in the first place, thereby making the point of what you want to do with it moot.

OK i just ran into a problem on Vista Home Premium. Before i installed AVG 8.0 (the antispyware version) I had to install the kb patch from microsoft.
After the install everything seemed to work ok.
Today I started the computer and it showed that i am connected to the internet but I could not go anywhere. I disabled webshield and that is how I am typing this.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Enable Webshield again and no internet

looks like it is not stable because i tried rebooting and now it works. Wonder if tomorrow i will have same problem.

I also found in Vista (no problem in xp) the email will not certify and put the message at the end of the email and it will not show that it is scanning email and in the email front page of the program it shows no emails scanned. Umm I did 5 tests. it should show it brought in 5 emails. I am using windows mail.

I unchecked the boxes in advanced settings, rechecked them, tried to reinstall the program- still will not check email.

I had the same problem and found the only way to get it working as intended was to install the firewall module, otherwise I lost DNS resolution.

After over a week with AVG 8 and numerous requests for support - I find it to be unbearably slow, ties up system resources, frequently locks up (crashing outlook 2003) when CPU usage reaches 100% (AMD Athelon 64 X2 dual processor 4200+ 2.20 Ghz w 2 MB ram),

Incompatible with numerous programs (Carbonite, Sana Security, Google Desktop, Personal Info keeper, etc.)

Mediocre tech support (you must fill in a web form and then wait at least 3-4 days for a response, that so far has been worthless).

No phone support despite 24/7 tech support claim.

This program was not ready for release.

I was ripped off and they refuse to fix my problems on a timely basis or refund my money

what firwall module? this program doesn't come with firewall, only avg 8.0 with firewall which I have on an xp computer and there it works fine.

In fact the only problems i am having is on my vista- on my xp computers I have no problems at all.

    Please explain what you did.

    thanks

also Grisoft is acknowledging my emails only by an auto response.
I have sent 4 web based support emails and none of them have been answered by a human. What happened to their support? I never had problems with them answering me via 7.5?

AVG has 3 versions of the new version 8 on the market right now.Is all those problems with all 3 or only with certain versions?I've been wanting to try the new suite on Vista but I keeps backing away!I guess i'm trying to narrow it down to a particular version that's all.o_O

All MY problems are with AVG 8 Internet Security (Home Version - $54.99).

Disabling the link scanner and Anti-Spam features helps some but then WTF am I paying for?

I found a good deal on AVG Pro 7.5 on the My Digital Life website. Using it with Comodo Firewall Pro, SAS Pro, and Mamutu. I think this set up offers as much protection as AVG 8.0, especially since I can't use all the protection 8.0 offers because of problems and slowdowns.

The question is how long will v. 7.5 be supported before you are forced to upgrade to 8?
I removed it from my computer but my son still uses AVG with firewall on his laptop. Runs so nice compared to v. 8.
It's a shame what they did to this.
Don't even think their tech support knows either.
    That's why e-mails go unanswered.
Should have stayed in beta for alot longer.

AVG 8 also appears to conflict with Paperport 11 (I get constant OCR Manager errors when both are running (even avg 8 in the background) - I have been using Paperport for many years and have never seen that error B4 installing AVG 8.

Why buy the program at all if you are going to disable modules of it because they don't work well in the first place?
If I'm going to buy half a product then AVG should charge half a price.
I just don't understand all this disable that and disable this and everything should be okay.
    There are alternatives.
Try to find one that does what it claims to do and works well on your system.

You hit the nail on right on the head. I don't believe in disabling all kind of modules in order to get it running properly. I want an Antivirus Program with all the important modules these days and if it is sold as such, it should work properly. I don't want a suite with firewall etc. So, again, I came out at the 'good old' Nod32 2.70.39 as the only one running like silk with everything activated 100%!

AVG has a history of releasing frequent updates to their program. It is reasonable to expect they will get the issues under control soon.

Well, I've spent well over an hour reading this thread, o_O . What have I learned?

AVG 8 works for some but not all. There seems to be right many who suffer slowdowns due to LinkScanner and the WebShield thing. And that damn tool bar. I agree. That one link to the review says they ask TWICE during install :p. No one should have to do a custom install to avoid browser slow downs. But that is why I go to Wilders before installing stuff anyway. :thumb: It also appears to me the one competitive advantage that AVG in the past had was offering a 2 year license, now they are only giving one year unless you fork over more money . Something Firecat noted as well in post 326.

Now heres my question. I note that at my local Office Max and I have some store credits to use which will reduce my $39.99 purchase down to about $31.99 on a TWO year license for the AVG 7.5 with Spyware protection. :thumb:

But how long will it be before I am forced to use 8, which when that happens will the problems listed in this thread be fixed and will they allow me to retain the rest of my license time if it is say 18 months or will Grisoft (now AVG) say sorry you are now down to 1 year with the update to 8. :thumbd: :p

    Anybody??
