I had gotten in on the free year of AVG 7.5 in December, and updated my license to 8.0, though I never used it. I've been using Avira AV Premium since I swapped from Kaspersky, and figured I'd give AVG a shot. My browsing certainly slowed down as compared to Avira, and the "IM protection" or whatever they called it stopped my MSN Messenger from connecting. My main gripe though, was when I disabled the instant messenging guard, the tray icon showed the AV as disabled, which does NOT put my mind at ease. I'm going to try installing AVG again, this time leaving out linkscanner, the IM protection, etc from the start, and see if it works better for me, but right now, I'm unimpressed.

Hello entropism. I have AVG 8.0 installed without the Web Shield and LinkScanner installed on a Windows XP system with only 512MB and now my browsing seems like it's back to normal. HoweverI still think AVG runs just a slght bit heavy on my PC. I ordered a second stick of 512 RAM for it and I'm anxious to see if that helps. Although the next version of Avira is suppose to be nice, if you have AVG for free I'd definitely try it without LinkScanner and maybe even Web Shield to see how you like it.

    Hi community :)
there is only the option to disable the link scanner, its not possible to install avg without it, right?
I´m wondering a bit,i made a custom install, the only thing to disable was the yahoo toolbar.
When i disable the link scanner, i have a warning symbol in my tray, looks bad.
Any way to install avg without the link scanner? It´s senseless for me because i´m using opera.

    regards,
    soul

Installed AVG 8 suite this AM - what a pos. No response from "24/7 tech support" since early this AM (now 7:30 PM). Has drastically slowed down my system, particularly IE and crashed Outlook at least 6-7 times, each time causing the data file to get corrupted & have to be checked. Anyone know if they offer a refund or am I just screwed?

Didn't you try it as a 30-day free trial?!

moron that I am, I tried the free (7.5) version for a few days & it worked fine. I upgraded to 8 because the free version doesn't automatically download updates. Didn't have problems until I set up 8.

If you do a brand "new" Custom Install of AVG 8.0, but don't install the Web Shield and leave the toolbar unchecked it will install AVG 8 without LinkScanner as well. If you install AVG 8 and later do the add remove components it doesn't fully remove the toolbar. At least that's what I have found. It was a little bit of a pain to do a complete uninstall and then Custom install. But again when I left out the Web Shield and the toolbar unchecked the LinkScanner didn't install. Hope this helps. AVG is running pretty well now for me along with Mamutu and SuperAntiSpyware. I do find when opening the GUI it takes a few seconds for it to initialize and even without SAS and Mamutu running Firefox opens a little slower than usual, but all in all I have had a very good experience with AVG 8.0 Internet Security. Oh yeah. I also don't have the E-mail and Spam components installed.

Anyone have a subscription and knows what the article says?

Edit: I've seen the VB-100 logo around, obviously, but how much "real world" weight does it hold? And how many products that we know to be "sub standard" hold this award? I mean, CA's AV isn't in the top tier, comparitively, but it still holds the VB-100.

Had quite a few problems with the slowing down and had a good contact with Support and sent in some log files etc., but never heard anything ever since. I am wondering what happened? Why don't they respond anymore?
If this is the way it's being handled, I am again very disappointed. Ik really like the new Avg Anitivirus 8.0, except for the slowing down part, but if this is the way it stays......it's no good for me.

you have just been used to drwebs speed, sadly this has now ruined most other softwares for you Bunk :D

avg 8.0 is a little slower than 7.5, but not by much, but it does include alot more than 7.5, so its the peoples choice :D

edit: its not Bunk :D (its morning and i saw drweb and the B..... :D )

Well, it's not just a little slower and it does include a lot more, which I really love, but some things just don't work properly. The big things for me: Msn keeps going off-line......and I can hardly open Hotmail and I don't think that's normal. I tested everything on a clean install of Vista Home Premium with nothing special running!

    Hi,
The article is a 'preview of AVG8', this is not about VB100 logo. I am sorry but I can't send here, would be against the copyright and subscription conditions :( And I am really sorry as the review is really good ;)

First of all, AVG Free edition DOES automatically download updates - there is a schedule (automatically on by default) to download updates once a day.

Second - what OS do you use? If you use Vista, have you tried to install the hotfix from Microsoft (there is a bug in Vista that may cause similar behavior when any filtering driver is installed). See my post earlier in this thread, please.

Why do you think so, DavidON? The engine has been rewritten with completely new emulator, also the multithreading support IMHO really rocks on dual- and quad-core systems. And the LinkScanner technology is actually something that none of these guys have.... But I am biased, yes :D

AVG8.0 being slower than 7.5? No way. It depends on what settings do you use. By default, the scanner tries to give more CPU and resources to other apps but if you want to scan your system really fast, move the slider in the on-demand scanner to 'Fast'. AVG 8.0 is typically twice as fast as 7.5 on multi-core processors and approx 30% faster on single-core. And it supports more archive types, so e.g. if you have CHM files in the system, these have not been scanned in depth by 7.5 but are scanned by 8.0.
Would be interested in what file types did you scan and how you scanned if you received these results.
BTW - system boot is also faster with 8.0 then with 7.5, by cca 10-20%, depending on the processor architecture

you are talking about scanning speed, not its performance on a system.

the scanner is definatly faster than 7.5, but it takes more load on the system, a slower boot (at least i would say) and a general slower drag on the system compared to 7.5

however, i still find it 'quite acceptable', but there should definatly be room for improvement

I use XP Media Center (OS)

By disabling the link scanner and anti-spam features of AVG 8 as well as shutting down Sana Security and Carbonite while an AVG Scan is running (which apparently will be most of the time if I keep it - I started a scan at 8 PM last night & it is still running almost 12 hours later with 35% +/- of the files remaining to be scanned) it has speeded up system performance to the point where it is borderline usable (running approx 30 to 50% of CPU usage - AMD Athelon 64 X2 dual processor 4200+ 2.20 Ghz and under 1/2 of the 2 MB ram)

The same scan typically took about 7-8 hours overnight with CA AV with Sana Security and Carbonite running and no crashes.

I guess I spoke to soon...

At almost 13 hours into the overnight scan it crashed again, I guess when it reached 100% of CPU usage.

It has still not completed a single system scan & still no sign of interest from AVGs 24/7 tech support
