    Hi :)

Just to let you all know...

I just turned on my Desktop Computer and noticed that AVG 8 hadn't updated since I turned it off earlier today o_O

So Obviously... I Clicked - Update Now

Got more than I bargained for though :argh: ... AVG 8.5 :D

    Warning!
When I was told to Restart my computer... It took ages!
I started to think it was never going to - Shutdown & Reboot :(
    In The End!
I was so tempted to force a Shutdown - I left the room .. To Stop Myself!
    Thank God I Did!
When I went back in the room 1 minute later.... Welcome Screen :D

Zena just out of curiosity did you have many incidents with AVG? I have the PRO and couple of days before it missed two trojans from my flash drive. I think they are going down. 7.5 was terrific :thumbd:

    Hi gery :)

As far as I know... I haven't had any missed infections.

    Although.. I Have to admit!
I've never really felt safe with AVG
So I have been doing regular scans with SAS and MBAM just to be sure.

I have had a few problems with AVG 8
    Like...
When I first got AVG 8 .. My little lad wasn't able to play his favourite online game via IE7
He had to use our AOL browser. ( Never had Firefox at that time )
Then... AVG 8 killed my AOL software / browser
Good Job By Then... My little lad was already able to play his online game via IE7 again.

    To Be Honest!
I was half hoping.. That they wouldn't update me to AVG 8.5 :doubt:
    Coz!
When my AVG subscription runs out in a few months... I don't plan on renewing it :thumbd:

I'm switching to - Avast Home
Like I've already got on my Laptop :thumb:

At least, they do something. :D

Now, out of joke, AVG offers a very decent protection. I never understood people complaining that it misses this or that infection. It may or may not happen to everyone. But, it will be the same to everyone using any other antimalware application.

At some point, any antivirus/antispyware will miss something, that other tool will detect. The same happens the other way around. That's not a reason to stop using a tool. Otherwise, people would be switching all the time, and I'm not talking about those guys/girls that do it for "fun". ;)

Bottom line is, don't expect an antimalware tool to detect everything; the very same way we shouldn't expect an intrusion prevention system to detect every action, so that it can be prevented. At some point, they all fail.

That's why a layered approach is needed.

    Regards

    Hi :)

    Re : My Desktop Computer

I haven't had chance to run a Full Scan with my new AVG 8.5 - Yet!
So I can't really comment on - AVG 8.5 :doubt:

    However!
    To Be Honest...
Running a Full Scan with AVG 8 .. Was one of the things I most disliked about it :(
It always completely Hammered my Hard Drive & CPU :argh:
Scan with SAS .. No Problem!
Scan with MBAM .. No Problem!
Scan with AVG 8 .. Can't Bare To Watch! :ouch:

If it was an old computer with low spec.. I could understand!
    But It's Not!

And that's the main reason I'm planning on switching to Avast Home .. Like I already have on my Laptop. :D

    Hi :)

I'm in the middle of a Full Scan - Now!

I've been popping in and out of the room from time to time :doubt:
    Happy to Say...
AVG 8.5 .. Does seem to be going a little more gentle on my Hard Drive and CPU :)

    Just a Little!

Although I'm not going to sit there waiting to see my 4 Cores Turn Red :ouch:

    PS.
    RAM usage ain't bad :thumb:
    My Vista Sidebar Gadget
The highest I've seen is 39%
    1202 MB ... Out Of ... 3070 MB

maddawgz, you are fighting a losing battle; the end is inevitable, yet there is no reason to delay the switch (unless you are running Win 98SE or earlier).

If you install AVG 8.5 without the LinkScanner and Web Search (Ask Toolbar) features, and disable the automatic Virus Database/Program Updates & automatic Scan on computer start-up, the latest version will run just like 7.5.

I'm happy I migrated nearly everyone I know from AVG Free 7.5 to alternatives before the first deadline last year. At the time I was convinced that AVG would not extend, which they have now done twice officially and once more, unofficially (i.e. currently) I don't know whether I should be happy or disappointed that they are so "unreliable"! :argh:

Zeena, you're right, my bad. Must have had the Norton threads on my mind. ;)
