I have 4 system files in the Virus chest:

    kernel32.dll
    kernel32.dll
    winsock.dll
    wsock32.dll

    All say no virus.

Why are the there and why is kernel32 in there with two different dates? They are also in my windows\system32 folder with the same last changed dates.

These are system files automatically backed up by avast! when installed. Don't worry. Several versions may be backed up if they are modified.

so they are distinct files and not "views" of the files in the actual system32 folder, correct?

These files in Virus Chest are actual copies of those locted in system folder, so you can restore them in case if original ones get corrupted or deleted.
Don't worry, in most of cases you won't even have to look at them.
