    1. I am not that sure what P2P is, so I probably am not doing it. I am on a cable network behind a NAT router and I want to put the right shields in place (avast!) on this new XP home build that I am currently in the middle of. P2P is napster and kazaa and other file sharing, right ? If so, I don't do it. Does the P2P shield serve any other purpose in my case ? I do download Linux ISO install disks by bit torrent though. Same thing ? Need the P2P shield ?

    2. I do not open web based mail at random. I don't think think that I need the web based e-mail shield unless it also serves another security purpose.

    3. That leaves the other three shields. I believe that I read a post where a couple of the avast! gurus suggested using those three for sure.

    Please let me know...

    Thanks,

    B.

Yeah providers mentioned by Vampiric Crow are the most basic required for optimal protection. All other providers provide additional layer of protection.
Internet Mail provider might be also useful as proactive defense against mass mailing worms (even if you don't use any POP3 mail client).
