I'm tired of these things, but at least Avast used valid sources.

an argument against defense in depth, of course it is marketing but mainly using the word "free" for convincing people such AV's are the future, when in reality they fails to explain such product share the same technologies than their paid product.
Second, the tests are very well chosen. This is just a highly creative interpretation of facts by avast software, difficult but not impossible to beat. ;)
Third, we know avast (not free or paid, but avast ;)) is very good but if they continue to make this type of creativity, they will loose their good reputation.
Fourth, avast really should reintegrate to heuristic tests by AV-C, the goal is to improve detection not evading the tests, and please you should improve detection of ITW samples in VirusBulletin tests, this really should be the focus and you will better protect the user base.

You will find that avast spend very very little money on marketing. All is done by users, word of mouth, referrals. On contrary, a lot of "other" companies throw tons of dollars in PR and sales.

And, while there is a difference, the goal is the same, isn't it? It just happens that one of them pays nothing for marketing, and using your own words, All is done by users, word of mouth, referrals..

I got nothing against that, by the way. But, if you ask me, avast is the smart "fellow". ;)

I had already tried avast! free as well as internet security. Both seems to be pretty good for a minimalistic computer and Internet user. After reading some official avast! forum topics, it missed quite a large amount of classified malware, detected by other security products...

avast is good on any computer, not just for the "minimalistic" user. if you read the forum of any AV company you will see the same topics. people write on such forums when in trouble. no AV has 100% detection.

Put Trend Micro into the comparison and I'm satisfied for the time being. :)

Very strange, they dont published the results of current RealWorld tests. As always there is something to hide.

Do you really think Norton is better than avast?

The reference tests are independent tests. You can, at least, trust in the independent test. By the way, in these tests, some other antivirus get better than avast in the picture. It's not a self promoting test.

Having tested them both many, many times, yes.

While well intentioned, the first post compares Avast! Free to Symantec/Norton. Then, the Avast! Blog compares it to the Paid Versions of Kaspersky, ESET & McAfee. There is no way that a thread like this can survive, based on Policy. Let's end it now. Thanks to all!
