Anyone used the compatibility install of Avast 7? What features are lost when you install it with that mode? Sorry if I missed the posts about that.

For me Avast 7 is cranking along without a hitch. I am one of those that had issues with the combination of Privatefirewall and Avast 6. However those issues must have been resolved in the updated version 7.

I really thought hard before trying Avast 7 since as mentioned above it fought with my firewall in version 6.

I am running 2 computers with Avast 7 and they run smoothly. I did NOT use Chrome or allow it to install in anyway. I am a die hard FF user.

In a perfect world they will release full support for Waterfox someday soon. It runs great on my 64 bit systems but I won't surrender the addon support (in 32 bit) to swap over.

My vote is "good job" to Avast. I can only cast a vote based upon what I experience. That is what I am going to do in Nov this year (USA)!! LOL!!

I have not had any issues on the machine I installed Avast 7 on. What issues are you all having?

There is another beta cooking from what I hear as well correct?

My sole problem with Avast IS 6 and IS 7 are the blue screens. They only happened when windows media player was in use, and I use it a couple of hours a day on average with blueservo, YouTube videos and songs and other things.

They happened with google chrome. I switched to Firefox, and they happened. I began using MSIE 8 and then 9, and the BSOD's continued. I removed Avast 7 and they stopped. No problems since.

I've mentioned a couple of times here and on the avast board that I did some digging and found that the problem goes back a couple of versions. So, I wrote of the $40 bucks I spent as a learning experience and moved on. It happens.

Crazy but I have had BSOD's with other products. In fact today, Im positive that WSA caused a BSOD for me. But overall, I have had little to no issues with Avast.

    Did you try contacting support?

Avast had some problems with WMP and from what i gather ,it seems to be more problems with XP than later OS.There was a problem with avast and WMP skin changing colour ,which when i checked out changelogs,i cant see whether that was ever fixed?.All the changelogs that ive looked at mentions
"attempt to solve the "Windows Media Player using a red skin" problem"
    http://www.softpedia.com/progChangelog/Avast-Home-Edition-Changelog-6474.html
,though i havent seen a changelog that says it was actually fixed ?.It seems theres some recognized problem ,with WMP and avast but whether its fixed or not i dont know.Did you save any info regarding the blue screens ,by using who crashed or other diagnostic tool?.Also after you installed avast have you tried disabling wmp (turn windows programs on or off) and then renabling? to see whether it makes a difference.I know also some xp users would alter avast settings to start after other services have loaded,to stop any potential conflicts.

    avast! 7.0.1426 released!

    LINK:
    http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=95170.0

For all that were having problems with initial avast! 7.0 version, it's highly recommended to update avast! to this latest version. Either by using stand alone installer or preferably integrated updater.

Let us know if this update solved your issues with initial v7 as well, so we'll know if things got fixed properly.

RejZoR Are you sure that font is big enough? :D

I have a 183 gb Steam folder, I just rattled through some of the later games, Alan Wake, Darkness2 etc and some of the older games all run fine with no pop ups. The only program I had to add was Furmark so far, this version seems a lot more compatible with gaming, all the issues I had are fixed and the program is light as anything I have ever used (AIS)
Less than two weeks, I wish all vendors could iron out bugs so quick! you could die from old age waiting for some..

Of course, on the other hand, if they'd simply waited 2 weeks to "iron out the bugs" before mass releasing it, and trashing lots of people's computers, that would have been even better, wouldn't it?

What about the majority of people whose computers weren't trashed?

I have no vested interest in avast! or any other AV company. I'm an independent computer technician. I work for me, its my name on the door and my reputation on the line. I won't be tied to any product that doesn't perform to my expectations. I fix 5 to 20 computers a week. I recommend products that are effective, fast and easy to use. Most of my clients are not very tech savvy, to put it mildly. They like avast! on the whole.

Avast! isn't the only product I recommend, but it's the most popular. I have installed avast! Free on at least 50 or so computers last year alone, often replacing other products that were failing to protect. Systems ranging from 10 year old XP installs to new desktops and laptops. Only two installs of avast!, about a month apart, were replaced with something else due to print jobs disappearing with Office Starter, a weird bug that neither the clients nor I had time to troubleshoot, though kindly Avast! forum members offered to help. All are set to auto-update when new versions are released. There are also a handful of installs of AIS.

If there are problems with anything, I hear about it. So far, I have had exactly 3 calls about upgrade problems since 7.0 was released. One person was bit by the bad definitions. I drove over there and fixed it in a few minutes the next day. Another called me because the power went out during the version update. She fixed it herself following the advice on the Avast forum. The last call was today, they couldn't register for another year, getting 404 errors. I advised patience and trying again tomorrow.

Frankly, I expected much worse, as this was a huge upgrade. I'm very pleased at how its gone. Much less trouble than other AV's have produced for me in similar situations in the past (not going to make this an A vs. B).

FWIW, I had a problem trying to upgrade the beta in place to the first final version. The protection modules hung on restart. Used the safe mode removal tool, did a clean install. Problem gone. I didn't expect a perfect transition...it DID say BETA.

The new version is mostly faster on my laptop, plays well with MBAM Pro when excluded from each other, and also plays well with HitMan Pro. Multiple file downloads are slower now. I can live with that in return for the overall speed increase.

The couple of comments I've heard from my clients about the new Auto-Sandbox were positive. The explanation dialogue is clear, and they understood the choice to make at next execution of the file. This really surprised me, as this has been the most confusing and "scary" feature for some of my clients.

So far, so good. I hear less complaints about avast! than any other realtime AV-AM product I recommend, and it is catching almost everything they throw at it. It blocks malware urls well, intercepts malicious downloads well, analyzes suspicious packages well, scans like lighning and cleans up well with the boot time scan. It means less return visits for me, but I'd rather provide avast! as part of a strong toolkit and some basic instructions so they have a fighting chance to fix it themselves. And often, they do - and they appreciate it.

Nothing is perfect, but avast! is closer than most. Nothing in that EULA bothers me very much. Can't say the same for some other major players.

I'm pleased with the changes and will keep recommending and installing it. Unless a better choice comes along. At this juncture, avast! is it.

    sbcc,

Last I saw in Avast forum posts, they are going to revert to Avast 6 solution for Sandbox, meaning you can ask if you want to execute or not. Not official, but a post there from someone from Avast. I can try and find the post if you want.

And that's fine. Your post rings true, and I have no problem with anything you've said. What I do have, however, are some questions, since what's being discussed is not just the problems with the upgrade, although that is a part of it.

    1. Would your clients even know how to run a sniffer to know what's being "phoned home" to avast? And/or, would that even be a concern to them?

    2. Would the matter of Chrome being installed at the system level, with or without their concern, or whether Chrome was opt-out or opt-in, be of a concern to them?

    3. Would the terms of the EULA be of a concern to them?

In short, are some of the non-installation issues a concern to your clients, or do they mainly just want to install and a/v and be done with it?

(Also...3/50, when it's expanded to 150,000,000 users world wide is 9,000,000 users.)
