I seem to have a small problem with v5. The right click context to scan a highlighted file in Windows Explorer doesn't work. Never had a problem with v4.8. Using Windows 7 64bit. Anyone else?

Will it be ok to use sandboxie with the new Avast or would it conflict with Avast's sandbox?

    Thanks

Has anyone noticed that Avast! 5 (Free Home Edition) now includes the ability to schedule scans...

I'm using OA 4.0.0.15 with the web shield enabled and I'm using Avast 5 and it's web shield enabled and have not noticed any slow downs. They both seem to be working.

While I certainly don't recommend you using keygens, you can allow avast! to ask you what to do when a virus/PUP/suspicious is found. You just need to change the action settings of avast!, which is set to block by default. I think avast! blocks by default because Alwil was probably thinking of the novice users, who may not be tech savvy and know what to do with a virus when it's found ("Should I move it to the chest? What about deleting!? What if I repair!!? I'm scared!")
    1. Open the avast! GUI
    2. Click REAL-TIME SHIELDS [on the left side of the GUI]
    3. Click File System Shield
    4. Click Expert Settings [on the right side of the GUI]
    5. Click Actions [on the left side of the new FILE SYSTEM SHIELD SETTINGS window that popped up]
    6. Change the first dropdown box [under Select action to be performed when a virus is found] to Ask
You are also free to specify some backup actions. Don't forget to repeat Step #6 for PUP and Suspicious.

I'm used to Avast doing this now and, when I'm doing any decent amount of downloading, I check the virus chest and pick out what I want to keep. I especially have to do this with zipped files. Many times Avast has tossed away my files because of a single threat. All I had to do was explore the contents, delete the malicious file, and unzip the remaining perfectly good files.

It wasn't a hugely noticeable slow down. Just when I opened a new web page it seemed like it lagged a second. Then the avast icon starting spinning and then the page loaded. I think while I have the avira premium key I'll use that till it runs out and then try avast again. I like it alot otherwise.

It has nothing to do with the cloud technology. All the data that is reported by the sensors that monitor the file system, registry, etc. is sent to the "behavior shield" and is then analyzed and the shield decides whether it is suspicious or not, it doesn't tell you its infected, it reports the suspicious files to you and then gives you the option to send the file to Avast to be analyzed further. It is not behavior module like Threatfire or Mamutu, avast did this to have a constant feed that gives them the latest threats straight from their users, and since they now have over 100 million users I imagine it works well. But don't expect it to block known malware threats, as this is not what it is for.

I dont know if this is what you are talking about but it has a persistent cache which is supposed to speed up scanning. Once you enable the feature it stores data about already scanned files so it speeds scanning up by checking the cache before it scans each file

I did exactly that, attempted to run sandboxie version 3.4 with a trial download of Avast 5 Pro with it's sandbox activated and my system completely locked up. No function was operational, not even task manager.
On a second attempt, same thing.

In both cases, I had to manually shut down my computer and cold boot.

I was also running CTM and don't know if that contributed in some way to the problem, but following the second reboot, I exited sandboxie, ran Avast 5 Pro using it's sandbox, and had no further issues.

I gave it a whirl on my older laptop (XP home, 1.5GB RAM,) and it seemed to produce a noticeable slowdown in browsing.
Pro-tem I'm back with MSE, which has less impact in the real world.
Avast probably has too many bells & whistles for me.

Rogervernon, you are right about the wisthles, why not compare them on simular features/protection:

    Try this
    - only install file shield, behavioral shield and mail shield
    - unselect "scan documents when opening" in the file shield

    Perform a scan

Add the fields total CPU time, number of reads/writes and bytes read/write to the taskmanager.

Reboot and now compare Avast with MSE (both feel and data provided by task manager). I am sure Avast feels faster and uses less CPU and much less I/O
