This new version hasn't been run through testing yet but the 4.8 version tested in the upper third with the big guys at AV Comparatives the last few rounds. This version should only do better I would think. I am seriously thinking of going Pro for the sandbox and script blocking. There was a link posted in here about Feb 9th offering a nice discount...

I discovered the update to 418 was available on my laptop running Win 7 32-bit last night. No notifications in the task tray. I discovered this by accident only because I clicked the arrow in the taskbar to check something else and happened to notice that Avast! 5 had DISABLED itself and was waiting for me to update!!! Guess I am luckly that I still had Immunet running as a secondary....

My PC definitely slowed down after I installed this latest version.

But to be fair, I have never ran a resident AV, so any AV will give me a noticeable decrease in speed.

So I removed it and will not have a resident AV.

It's usually just the first boot, until the "persistent cache" is built. Then it should be extremely light.

I've been having internet connectivity problems with the free version, and I think the problem is Avast. Have put on AntiVir again to make sure.

How could Avast antivirus cause Internet connectivity problems?

It could be the 'web shield' scanning http traffic protocals
some folks have complained of slower browsing sessions

I think that's what it might be. I'll be on the internet for a while and then suddenly have to unplug/plug the router due to connectivity problems.

True, the new GUI looks awesome in my opinion, probably the best i've seen.

Looks good, easy to use, easy to understand :D

I notice the slowdown too. I hope they can do something about it soon. An example...engadget loads 2-3 seconds slower than using ZoneAlarm security or Antivir + OA or Avast 4.8 + OA

Avast! 5 is light indeed. But it cuts 50% off from internet speed when downloading files (large) from net. I usually get 60Mbit/s. With Avast! speed is about 30Mbit/s. If I disable webshield, everything is back to normal.

Interesting. I don't get any noticeable slowdown from the webshield. I download files via http all the time, and watch them with DU Meter. With or without webshield I get close to 90% of my DSL link speed, so whatever the slowdown is I can't see it on the graph. But I am also only running at 3Mbps. Maybe post the comment at the Avast! forum?

I don't notice any slowdowns when I download files...I notice it only when I visit pages.

Interestingly I only experience slower loading pages using Chrome, but not using FF. Loading my Mailwasher is slightly slower in both. But I'm not complaining.:)

Have you considered disabling the web scanner? If you really want to keep Avast, but with an alternative web scanner, download the AVG linkscanner standalone.

Sorry I didn't realize they were that different. Can you give a brief explanation of the differences?

Is it that linkscanner only works for search results?
