These test are useful, individual test isn't useful, but over time a pattern will emerge and that's how these tests are useful and can serve us to evaluate the products.

To clear about this norton compares the file to its community database and tells the user about the file. Even when I downloaded Malware defender beta(v2.6) norton did notify me that the file is very new and also refrained to execute the application.

I know I am replying to an outdated post but was really was getting bored so I started from reading from Post#1:) :)

Also credits to TheIgster it does drive you nuts for testing so many apps:eek: Keep up the good work and also won't you mind testing trend micro and Dr Web:) :)

I take all of these tests into consideration since they have merit in one way or another. Now that we're finally starting to move away from the 'static' test beds and into 'real world' I look forward to seeing more people performing their own tests in non-vm environments. Kudos to TheIgster for taking the time to do his own testing and sharing the outcome with us. We may not always like the results if the av that we're using doesn't come out on top, but in the end nothing is 100% on any given day.

@Fajo Drop it mate, everyone find merits in these tests apart from you.

I just want to say thanks to those that are posting their thoughts in this thread and thanks to those that appreciate the tests.

At the end of the day, these are nothing special, but they do take time and I'm glad they are appreciated by some.

There have been a few folks who challenge the validity of the tests, both here and on another forum that I post on and I get that, but really, the tests are what they are. I have not lied or misrepresented them at all. I think I have explained exactly what I do and how the tests are performed.

It is true that on any given day, one AV might be better than another and then the other way around the next day, but I think over time we would see patterns emerge. Some of us might be able to base our AV choice on those patterns. Hey, I was a devout Avast supporter and was really impressed when it went 30 for 30 off the top. But then, it fell flat on it's face. That's why I'm running Kaspersky right now. It has performed very well. But again, I will most likely continue to do some more testing and that choice might change again...:D

I'm thinking that this coming weekend, I might do another round of tests with a couple of the products that have done fairly well over time (Kaspersky and Avast) as well as a few different ones that I have not tried like some of the ones noted in the thread. Then I wouldn't mind doing a challenge between the top 3 performers perhaps the following weekend. In this test, I might see about grabbing many more links (somewhere along the lines of 100 or so) and really test those top 3.

There are lots of other things that could be done though. I wouldn't mind testing some security combinations for example using Prevx or MBAM realtime along with an AV to see how they perform as well. Lots of work ahead...;)

Hi Igster, maybe if you do get a little extra space and time in your trials you might try just the Comodo antivirus (no firewall or Defense+) to see if they've made any improvements there.

Nopes they are releasing the new build probably tomorrow.

I don't think I can post the info here but hschuette has said that they will release tomorrow:)

No all products have been tested with default settings, they should all be given a fair chance. So it will be Comodo AV with Defense+ turrned on.

Yeah, most likely. Not sure how the product installs if you choose not to install the firewall portion, but just the AV. Would it still install D+?

So that's Comodo and Trend Micro. Someone mentioned Dr. Web as well, but isn't Dr. Wen just an on-demand scanner?

that is dr web cureit.....dr web has an av also along with security suite.....here....http://products.drweb.com/

Yes it will still include D+.

    OK...will do then.

Then that's the way it would get tests then because that is the way the average user would install it.

Would be nice to see another round of tests with NOD32... to give it another change... Would be nice to see trend micro too.

TheIgster allow me a suggestion. What do you think about a method that will define which products will partecipate in your tests. I will try to give an example here...consider it a simple example:

Let's say you have the time to test 10 AVs each weekend (thanks again for your time by the way ).

    Now for the next weekend:
    1. You keep the top 4 performers
    2. You keep the 3 products that performed worse ( let's give them another chance )
    3. Then remain other 3 positions: Here you can enter new products or selectively insert products that you have already tested in the past.

You have already mentioned some similar intentions, but my thinking is that you should put some rules about which products enter the test. I felt that it was necessary to post this since we all agree that we want to identify some possible patterns in the next months...believe me...in order to avoid some comments that I think will appear soon...there is a need of repetition...at least for the top performers...this way the patterns we seek will be more visible.

Take this as a sincere and friendly suggestion. These are your tests and you can do them the way you like. Thanks again.
    Best regards,
    NoIos

    Yep, good suggestion NoIos.

I've been trying to use some of the same programs and try to get to all the suggested programs, so I have been keeping the top 2 performers (as I did last time) and then try to try some more.

There are some from the original test that need a second chance as well, so I'm going to try and get them in again to see if their trends continue or not.

Just wish I had more time...stupid life and work get in the way...:(

I only skimmed through the thread, but I see on page 7 you re-ran some tests again and didn't include two of the major freebees, Avira and Microsoft. Can you add those back in when you do it again?

    Great work by the way!

So for new ones, we have Dr. Web, Comodo and Trend Micro and retests we have Nod32 and MSE.

Try Twister if you have extra time, from what I have seen it has good detection rates.

    Can't...32-bit only. :(

Totally agree, repeated tests such as these do show a leaning towards, better or worse detection etc of products. Some days maybe they might miss any number of nasties, but over time a definate picture builds up of which ones are more on the case than others. And i'd rather be with the A team than not :)

The only snag is, if it's you that gets hit on an off day :D But who knows when which product, even the best, will have one, and you just happen to be using it when it happens. Not many of us will suffer though due to our various other precautions. But lots of people out there, still do and will :(

Hmmm... there is no fun in using a pure classical HIPS as an AV test. It will stop or not depends upon ur reply to the pop up. You can score 100 and u can score even zero, watever you want.
