The amount of participants is getting smaller by the month... No Sophos, no Comodo, no ESET and others...

Not when it comes to protection. Sort the list by the protection scores by
clicking on the column header. WD is fifth from last, tied with McAfee and
K7. Only Malwarebytes, Total AV, eScan, and PC Matic scoring lower.

Protection is the only number I really care about. Performance is machine dependent and usability is user dependent. Although it looks like they are calling false positives usability in this test which to me are not the same thing.

    AV-Test is a German institute.
The AV-vendors You mentioned, have almost zero market share here.

AV-Test's reports are respected well beyond Germany's borders.

By the way, how did you get a picture of my cat, Tora-chan, to use as your avatar? :p

    Totally irrelevant, imo.
.... and AV-Comparatives is an Austrian institute. So what?

Better than no test at all, wot! The alternatives are to base selections on: 1) word of mouth, or 2) which advertisements sound the best, or 3) some half-baked amateur test on YouTube, or 4) just make a blind stab & hope for the best.

    I agree.
I don't blindly "believe" those tests and prefer to test for myself how specific software works on my system.
But following test results over time gives me additional information so I can easier take decision which software to use.

Yes indeed, these tests are a good indication of results through the years if one cares to pay attention every now and again. Mind you if one belongs to this category of people skeptical of the objectivity of these tests, why post at all? If you think this is all irrelevant just ignore these threads. I don't like the Olympic games, and I never watched them on TV, but I don't think they are bad or useless. Case in point is Windows Defender, it used to be very average at best not so long ago, nowadays it is competing with the best out there, how are we supposed to know of its progress? Trust MS? Not many would, believe me.
