For me it is not a matter of how my favorite AV performed. I was just trying for find a place that did an honest evaluation/test of AV software. I was disappointed to find out that the labs are getting paid by the vendors.

It seems to me that perhaps the most unbiased testing is being performed by PcMag. I would be happy to hear what others think. Please don't tell me they are getting paid:)

What AV application(s) do you use?

I have Avira (free on XP), Avast (free on Vista) and Nod32 V5 (paid on Win7)

I wonder if the testing orgs are not paid by the vendors, who is going to foot the bill. It cost a lot of money to do the tests. Should they charge those of us who are interested? I suspect most would not want to pay the tab.

Surely folks don't think the test folks spend a lot of money for the fun of it. They have to eat and sleep under a roof also.

I looked at icsa labs but they show no test for Norton AV, Bitdefender or Webroot. I'm not sure why they are not included but it makes me suspicious.

It possible to be too suspicious.

As to why these products were not included you would have to ask the lab or the vendors.

What sort of a lab test would satisfy you? Would you pay for the service yourself as a sort of user pay or do you expect it to be $ free?

Who pays the salaries of the workers in the lab?

BTW I asked a question that you have not answered yet, this makes me suspicious!

If the testing lab provided what I believed to be a worthwhile service I would be willing to pay. In the past I have subscribed to Consumer Reports to receive what I believed to be a good and unbiased job.

PcMag seems to do a good job of testing but admits to also relying somewhat on paid commercial lab results.

I'm troubled by the fact some AV's are rated highly by one service but not rated or rated poorly by another service or reviewer.

I've used AVG, Bitdefender, Mcafee, Pc Tools, Webroot and Norton. Currently on Norton 360.

Woops i forgot to check that one out. :D
I thought it was just the report language.
Wow seems that the major chinese AV's perform quite well on the file detection test. (I used to think they were a lot worse on file detection) Good Job!

Both Qihoo and Tencent use the Avira engine and definitions, so it is no so surprising.

    So now I understand.

With Norton not participating because they apparently wanted to cherry pick what tests they would take you can't use AV Comparatives to check you current AV out against the other 20.

Norton is not short of $ so that is not their issue.

norton is good but when we are talking about top notch real world protection or whatever kaspersky and bitdefender are the ones clutching the top ranks whether it's in tests done by independent companies like av-comparatives or private home users just for sake of trying new software.....I always look at the tests done by independent companies like av-comparatives but use products which suite me and impresses my own tests....

since the chart has been updated with 2012 results some things in the 2011 chart are weird/wrong (e.g. it shows an entry 17 instead of a product name). It will get corrected soon (probably taken offline in the meantime). The whole website is going to be redesigned soon.

From the time he started testing, I have utmost confidence in IBK and his tests. I believe they are as unbiased as humans can do, and I seriously consider his results in choosing my own AV.

Although I am using Norton IS, if Norton continues to opt out I will go to another AV whose test results give confidence. As far as I am concerned it is public test results which cause AV developers to keep pace with the competition.
