Austria’s foreign ministry is facing a serious cyberattack, possibly from a foreign country, it said on Saturday.

“Due to the severity and the nature of the attack, it cannot be ruled out that it is a targeted attack by a state actor. In the past, some European countries have been targeted for similar attacks,” the ministry said in a statement that gave no more details.
The attack came on the same day the environmentalist Greens backed forming a coalition government with Sebastian Kurz’s conservatives.

The ministry said a task force was countering the attack on its information technology systems. Services such as travel information were still available on its website.

The Austrian State Department's IT systems were under a 'serious attack' suspected to be carried out by a state-backed threat group according to a joint statement from the Foreign Ministry (BMEIA) and the Ministry of the Interior (BMI).

"A coordination committee has been set up on the basis of the Network and Information System Security Act, and all relevant federal agencies are already active," the press release says. "The problem was recognized very quickly and countermeasures were taken immediately."
Austria ill-prepared for such incidents
"The recent and ongoing hacker attack on the Foreign Ministry clearly shows how important cyber defense is and how little Austria is apparently prepared to ward off cyberattacks," Austrian Parliament lower house member Robert Laimer said in a statement.
Suspected nation-backed cyberattack
"Due to the severity and the nature of the attack, it cannot be ruled out that it is a targeted attack by a state actor," says the joint BMEIA and BMI statement. "The state protection mechanisms provided for this are active at all levels."

In the past, some European countries have been targeted for similar attacks. Despite all the intensive security measures, there is no 100% protection against cyber attacks. - BMEIA and BMI joint statement

Earlier January, Austria’s foreign ministry announced it was facing a “serious cyberattack” and that it could be the work of a nation-state actor.

This week, the Austrian foreign ministry announced that the cyber attack against its systems has ended.

“After really intensive work and excellent cooperation between all the departments involved, last weekend we managed to clean up our IT systems and end the cyber attack on the Foreign Ministry,” said Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg. “The highest possible data security at the Foreign Ministry is guaranteed and no damage to the IT equipment could be detected.”
The authorities are still investigating the attack, the government experts have no doubt about the fact that it was a targeted cyber-espionage attack against the Foreign Ministry.

Major cyber attacks are a rarity in Austria, only a few large-scale attacks were observed in the past years.
