A cyberattack forced Australian beverage manufacturer Lion to shut down its IT system, interrupting manufacturing and orders, the company disclosed on June 9.

“We immediately shut down all our systems as a precaution, and we have continued to work with cyber experts to determine how much longer our systems will be impacted,” the company said.
While there is no evidence of a data breach, the company is still investigating the incident that halted its brewery output across the country. To continue serving customers and partners, Lion adopted manual systems to receive and process orders.

Making matters worse, the disruption of business follows a major IT upgrade project that spanned across a two-year period. The technological enhancement implied centralizing the company’s 500 applications into one cloud-based platform.

Lion confirms a cyber-attack first reported by the Herald on Monday is a ransomware attack - where hackers seize control of data or systems then demand a ransom that often runs to millions.

The brewing giant and bar owner has taken systems offline as a precaution - hitting both manufacturing and customer orders.
The Herald understands supplies are now running low at a number of outlets, who are unable to reorder. This morning, the company confirmed that plans to ramp-up brewing for level 1 had been thwarted by the ransomware attack.

Lion says its Speights brewery resumed production yesterday, and that its call centre is now operational.

But elsewhere in its operations, there are still major disruptions a week on from a ransomware attack that saw its IT systems taken offline - hitting manufacturing, ordering and distribution.

"Across our Australian and New Zealand adult beverages businesses, we continue to have limited visibility of our products in our systems. We're working to bring our breweries back online as soon as possible, hoping to get a number of our breweries back up and running very soon," the company said in a statement last night.
The beverage giant now has shortages or out-of-stocks on several of its beer brands in Australia.

Trans-Tasman brewer Lion appears to have received a US$800,000 (NZ$1.25m) ransomware demand from extortionists who infected its IT systems.

Stuff is aware of evidence of a ransomware demand being made via "dark web" service Tor by extortionist group REVil that instructed Lion to make payment using a cryptocurrency currency called Manero.

As Australia reels under sustained cyber attacks following increased Chinese diplomatic hostility, the country's Lion brewery and dairy conglomerate has been hit for the second time.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Lion told its staff today "it had been hit by a second cyber attack that had further disrupted its IT systems."

"The company is now focusing on defence efforts over restoration from the previous attack, its chief executive officer Stuart Irvine told employees during the briefing," said the newspaper, citing a source who had listened to the call.
The second attack was "anticipated" and Lion's IT security bods of choice, Accenture, are said to be dealing with it.

Lion gets breweries up and running following ransomware attack

Australian beverage giant Lion has provided another update to the ransomware attack it suffered earlier this month, saying that over the past week, the company has continued to make progress in restoring many of its key systems.

"As we indicated last week, it remains a real possibility that data held on our systems may be disclosed in the future," it said. "Unfortunately, this is consistent with these types of ransomware attacks.
In an update on Friday, Lion said it has managed to get all of its breweries back up and running, and that its dairy and juice sites are also operational.

"We are now brewing, kegging, packaging, and distributing beer at our nine major breweries across Australia and New Zealand," the company said.
