Comcast Extends 60-Days of Free Internet Service to New Internet Essentials Customers

Comcast today announced it will continue to provide 60 days of free Internet service to new, eligible Internet Essentials customers. Originally set to expire on June 30, the free offer will now be available through the end of this year. In addition, Comcast will continue to waive, through the end of the year, the requirement that customers not have a past due balance with Comcast to qualify for the free offer.

Since 2011, Internet Essentials has connected more than two million low-income families to the Internet, serving approximately eight million people.
The program, which offers low-cost, high-speed Internet service for $9.95 a month plus tax, also provides multiple options to access free digital skills training in print, online, and in person. In addition, customers have the option to purchase a low-cost Internet-ready computer.

Internet Essentials is structured in partnership between Comcast and tens of thousands of school districts, libraries, elected officials, and nonprofit community partners.

As part of its continued push to keep people connected during the pandemic, Comcast is making its public WiFi hotspots free to anyone for the remainder of 2020. In March, Comcast made its 1.5 million public hotspots free to all (even non-Xfinity Internet subscribers). The offer was set to expire after 60 days, but now the hotspots will remain free for another six months.

“We saw a huge jump in usage after we opened up our public hotspots, and we’re excited to keep them open through the end of the year as the nation begins taking steps to reopen,” Dana Strong, president of Xfinity Consumer Services, said in a statement.
According to Comcast, hundreds of thousands of non-Xfinity customers have taken advantage of the free hotspots.

Last month, Senators Cory Booker, Kamala Harris and Ron Wyden urged Comcast to make all of its WiFi hotspots (including Xfinity customers’ routers) open to students who don’t have internet access at home. In response to Engadget’s inquiry at that time, Comcast pointed to its other programs meant to keep people connected.

Major Internet service providers are scheduled to end their quarantine benefits soon, once again subjecting Americans to data caps and removing protections if they are unable to pay their bills.

This could be the last weekend of unlimited data for Comcast Xfinity subscribers and other major ISPs.
For many of those who are out of work, ISPs could begin demanding payment for outstanding broadband bills on June 30.

When asked whether Comcast would extend its unlimited data offer, a Comcast spokesman demurred. “Nothing to announce yet,” he said via email. “We’ll keep you posted.”

Verizon extends discounted internet offer to low-income customers until the end of 2020

Verizon announced today an extension to its internet offer providing discounted rates to low-income consumers under the Lifeline program. That means new customers will receive a $20 discount on their monthly internet bill until the rest of the year, assuming they are eligible for the offer.

Additional benefits for eligible consumers include a free one year of Disney+ or Hulu, waived router rental fees for the first 60 days, and other promotions available upon sign-up. Verizon will continue to accept new registrations through the rest of 2020. However, eligibility for the program varies by state.

The company noted that this offering began in April of this year as a part of efforts to help low-income households keep connected to the web during the coronavirus pandemic. In March of this year, Verizon also offered 15GB of additional mobile data per month to consumers and small businesses with no additional charge.
