Seqrite – a specialist provider of endpoint security, network security, enterprise mobility management, and data protection solutions – has highlighted the growing cyber threat to Indian enterprise ecosystem with the Seqrite Annual Threat Report 2020.
Manufacturing, BFSI, Education, IT/ITES, Healthcare, and Government emerge as the most lucrative sectors for cybercriminals

Threat researchers at Seqrite also observed several large-scale advanced persistent threats (APT) attacks deployed against organisations in the government sector, including prominent attack campaigns such as Operation m_project and BackDoor.DTrack.
Amongst other interesting trends highlighted in the Seqrite Annual Threat Report 2020 was the growing sophistication of malware attacks.

Unsecured Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and Server Message Block (SMB) protocols continued to be targeted through brute-force attacks. Spear phishing attack campaigns leveraging Office exploits and infected macros were also used extensively by cybercriminals to gain access to enterprise networks and steal critical data.

Maximum malware (51%) were detected by the Real-Time Protection methodology for 2019. Behaviour-based malware detection technology was responsible for 23% signature-less detection in 2019

Malware infection continues to be a threat
Seqrite detected over 146 million malware in 2019 which is massive in number. The highest detection of malware happened in Q4 – 2019 which saw 46 million malware detected.

Q4 sees a spike in malware
Seqrite detected 46 million malware in Q4, compared to a little above 35 million in Q3, 30 million in Q2 and 25 million in Q1.
The manufacturing sector remains at highest risk
The manufacturing sector saw the highest number of malware attacks in 2019 with over 8 million detections. The education and the professional sectors were second and third on the list with over 7 million and around 6 million attacks, respectively.
APT attacks will continue
The Annual Threat Report 2020 also has a detailed section on Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) which are designed to infiltrate high-value targets important to national governments such as the military, power grids, nuclear plants, etc. APTs are typically used by nation-states for cyber warfare.
