I think it really depends on what sites you go to. If my surfing was relegated to my personal bank and grocery store websites, my chances of being hacked would be minimal unless those sites got attacked. There are many PCs with many IP addresses floating around at any given time, so sometimes it just "bad luck" when you get located and targeted. ;)

A computer just sitting connected to the internet on a nat router isn't a problem. As mentioned it is not only about your OS being patched but your apps are vulnerable also. You will get infected if you go to sites that use these vulnerabilities. no dought about it.

I do understand you are not looking at that point and only looking for someone trying to get through your router which has nothing to do with your OS or APPS at all.
As explained in the DSlReports threads, it was more a matter of vulnerabilities in internet protocols that allowed the packets through.

I agree that Nat routers are necessary for home users.

My Windows username for this machine happens to be "Virtual Machine". It's what I use for testing various apps. :D

Solcroft, nothing will happen to you unless you have a vulnerable service or program running and opening ports and someone out there is able to exploit that vulnerability somehow. If the OS is totally unpatched, then the assumption would be that a vulnerable service is perhaps running with open ports, in which case something could happen IF properly exploited. I have no idea how to do such a thing, but that's about the extent of it in a nutshell. You need to find someone who knows how to do it, and then you may have a mess.. Keep in mind also, that many ISPs now block some of the ports that are commonly used to do this stuff, so you may be indirectly protected by your ISP without realizing it, even though you have no firewall.

nope. The value of stealthing is tested between a system with closed ports and filtered/stealth/blocked ports.

This guy has some *open* ports

Question is do home routers block outgoing packets?

Well yea they do but is is not a default setting.

Most new ones have the ability to block any web site and IM.
Take the time to learn your router !!!!!

I'm asking to be hacked, not for people to tell me what I already know, thanks.

This seems more appropriate for CraigsList than for here.

Why should anybody want to hack you? ;)

If I'm not mistaken, much of what people see in firewall logs are probes/scans, and not hacks per se.

He made 7 posts today. The last one was only about 2 hours before your post.

I imagine he hasn't been back in this thread because either he didn't have time to review his test system, or, more likely, no one hacked or tried to hack that system yet.

I am sure most of you have already seen this Defcon video but in case you haven't here ya go;)

Mods can remove if they don't think a video on hacking into corporations with their approval to find vulnerabilities is ethical.

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8220256903673801959&hl=en

This may help shed some small ray of light on whether a person behind a router could be compromised or not.

    Thanks

    Bruce
