Netflix has exceeded one billion downloads on the Play Store, as spotted by Android Police. It is a rather common feat for Google-developed apps, but for the streaming giant, this is a remarkable achievement.

In some OnePlus and Samsung phones, the app comes pre-installed, which also helps the numbers. It is safe to say that Netflix is still the biggest streaming service worldwide, as competitors are way behind. For comparison, Hulu has just 50 to 100 million downloads, and the Prime Video app is between 100 to 500 million downloads on the Play Store.

One of the biggest cloud storage rivals to Google Drive — Dropbox — has now reached the coveted 1 billion download milestone on the Google Play Store.

We recently saw video streaming Netflix hit the same milestone thanks to COVID-19 lockdowns, but in this case, this is no small feat given just how competitive the cloud storage space has become in recent years. That said, it has taken Dropbox around a decade to hit that 1 billion download milestone though (via Android Police).
However, that Dropbox download figure still pales in comparison to Drive with it’s 5 billion+ installs.

Android Auto's download count over on the Play Store is positively exploding. In a mere four months, the app has gone from 500 million installs to over a billion. Only six months before that, it was at 100 million. That's an incredible order of magnitude of growth in less than a year.

In case you live under a rock, Android Auto is Google's phone-powered infotainment system, working either with your car's built-in hardware or standalone on your phone itself to give you a big-screen interface for navigation, media, and hands-free voice commands. And in the last ten months alone, the base app has accrued 10x as many downloads as it has in its entire life since 2015.

This sharp and sudden rise in downloads makes more sense in that context: Android Auto isn't suddenly taking off, Google's just forcing it to be pre-installed on more phones.

Part of the "Google Docs Editors" suite of apps — and yes, I am just learning that name today — Sheets is a cornerstone for productivity tools. While it's not quite as powerful as Microsoft Excel, it is more than does the job for casual spreadsheet users. It's not the most exciting application on the Play Store, but it's still a must-have tool in 2021.

Keeping in touch with your friends and family is much easier if you have their numbers saved, and if you use Android, then it’s almost certain that you’ll use Google Contacts — which has now joined the 1 billion download club on the Play Store.

There has clearly been a surge in uptake of the stock contact book, as Google Contacts only surpassed the 500 million download milestone just under a year ago (as spotted by Android Police). Not all OEMs ship devices with Google’s address book as the stock option, but there has been a real shift over the past couple of years with regard to Google apps and non-Pixel phones.

Although known simply as “Contacts” on the Google Play Store listing, it’s technically “Google Contacts,” at least as we’ve known it.

Third-party messaging client Telegram has now joined an exclusive and limited club after surpassing the 1 billion download figure over on the Google Play Store.

Likely spurred by the recent outage to Facebook-owned services such as WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, cross-platform messaging app Telegram has now surged over the 1 billion download mark on the Play Store (via Android Police).

According to Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, the messaging app had over 500 million active monthly users at the start of 2021. With WhatsApp experiencing issues and Face Messenger similarly affected by the core Facebook outage, Durov shared via his public Telegram channel that over 70 million joined the service as a result.

However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean that there at 1 billion people out there using the app on a regular basis. This download figure also does not include those sideloading the APK from the official website either. That said, it’s nice to see another messaging alternative making waves.

Undoubtedly the gold standard in the navigation and cemented in the No. 1 position on the mapping charts, Google Maps has now reached the 10 billion download milestone on the Play Store.

Given that there are very few “free” mapping services that can match the accuracy and feature set of Google Maps, it’s a must download no matter what mobile OS you prefer. It has joined a very small and elite club of apps to reach the 10 billion download milestone — which includes Google Play Services and YouTube (via Android Police).

Of course, Maps comes pre-installed as part of Google Mobile Services but that doesn’t account for all of the downloads on the Play Store. Either way, even as the “default” mapping service on Android, 10 billion downloads or installs is still a whopping figure.

Gmail for Android has hit a pretty huge milestone after surpassing the 10 billion download milestone on the Google Play Store.

Having been around since the dawn of Android, the Gmail app is essential for billions of people across the globe, so it comes as no great shock that it has attained this download milestone (spotted by Android Police). However, it’s quite a shock that it has taken this long — especially since Gmail comes pre-installed on almost all Android smartphones.

I'd think Google apps shouldn't count, for the reason that they do some preinstalled for almost everyone. It would be way more of an achievement for something that did not.
