Apple has been hit with a class action federal lawsuit by customers who are alleging that information on their iTunes purchases was sold by Apple to third parties. The plaintiffs are seeking an excess of $5 million in damages, according to the lawsuit that was filed May 24 in California’s Northern Federal District.

Leigh Wheaton, Jill Paul and Trevor Paul, three iTunes users from Rhode Island and Michigan, filed the lawsuit claiming that despite the fact that Apple engaged in an ad campaign “touting its supposedly pro-consumer positions on issues of data privacy” [...] “What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone," [...]
“None of the information pertaining to the music you purchase on your iPhone stays on your iPhone," according to the 51-page lawsuit.

“The data Apple discloses includes the full names and home addresses of its customers, together with the genres and, in some cases, the specific titles of digitally-recorded music that its customers have purchased via the iTunes Store and then stored in their devices,” according to the lawsuit.

I automatically assume that Apple know everything locally stored on my iMac. So, although I don't use iTunes, I'd assume they were monetising any information gleaned from it. Naughty Apple. Not only that, Google know where I live and Apple know my Gmail address.

A US judge has thrown out a class-action lawsuit that claimed Apple "sold and otherwise exposed" the data of iTunes and Apple Music users.
As per MLex, US District Court Judge William Alsup this week ruled that the evidence presented by plaintiffs was inadequate, and threw out the $5bn lawsuit. The plaintiffs had until 14 November to file an amended complaint but failed to do so, meaning that the case has now been permanently dismissed.

The lawsuit was first filed at California's District Court back in May, with three plaintiffs alleging that Apple had "intentionally and unlawfully" shared data with third parties without explicit permission, which could break local laws.
More worryingly still, the papers alleged that Apple was aware that listening data was leaking after a blog post in early 2016 drew conclusions that Apple acknowledged but failed to fix for eight months.
