Apple, Samsung Phones Make Up Almost All Carrier Store Sales: Analyst

At first glance, the US phone market looks competitive, with devices available from a wide range of vendors like Apple, Google, LG, Motorola, OnePlus, and Samsung. In practice, however, it appears to be anything but. According to a new analysis, over 90 percent of the devices sold at the four largest US carriers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon) were made by Apple or Samsung, with 95, 94, 91, and 94 percent of the market at each carrier (listed in the same order as above).

There are a lot of ways to read this data, which PCMag steps through in some detail.

The numbers are apparently a little better if you examine prepaid markets, where there is a wider range of vendors and cheaper devices.
Apple holds a 42 percent market share, compared with 25 percent for Samsung and 12 percent for LG (gained by combining prepaid and postpaid sales). Lenovo picked up 8 percent, and the remaining 13 percent was divided among “Others.”

What this means, however, is that the US market is more of a duopoly at the high end than in the lower-cost segments, where prepaid customers tend to buy and where companies like LG pick up much of their market share. According to a 2018 article, the Samsung/Apple duopoly concentrates at the top of the market. The market for cheap Android devices where Apple doesn’t compete shows more variation as far as customer choice.

Apple wins Christmas: iPhone claims top 9 spots for mobile device activations in the US

In a report from Flurry Analytics, Apple was the winner of the holiday gift season with the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and a healthy mix of older models contributing to the company’s dominance over every other manufacturer, in the United States at least.

For the period Christmas Day through New Year’s Eve, Apple iPhones and iPads represented about 43% of all mobile device activations in the US, according to the report.
Despite not appearing in the top 10 chart, Samsung was actually the second most successful manufacturer for the overall US holiday period, with a diverse share of cheaper handsets making up the majority of its activations.

On just Christmas Day, the report says that Apple iPhone models took the top nine spots for activations. That means a lot of iPhones were sitting under the Christmas tree ready to be unwrapped.
Over the week, the entry-level Apple flagship phone, the iPhone 11, was unsurprisingly the most popular phone with 6.2% of the total pie. iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max accounted for 5.27% share.

Report: iOS adoption sees highest numbers in Q1 US activations since 2016

CIRP is out with a new analyst report today looking at US smartphone activations in the March quarter and whether consumers went with iOS or Android. On the bright side for Apple, iOS adoption for new activations was the highest its been since 2016. However, customer loyalty is very high for both Android and iOS, so there aren’t many switchers to pitch to…

CIRP’s data from Q1 2020 shows that iOS had a 44% market share in the US with Android grabbing the remaining 56%.
Compared to the same quarter last year, iOS saw a roughly 8% jump in new activations in the US.
[...] the OS duopoly is likely to continue even if slight changes happen over time.

“[...] Despite Apple’s efforts to attract Android users to iOS, and Android handset manufacturers’ similar efforts to attract iPhone customers, operating system usage is among the stickiest of all consumer affinities.”

Teenagers still like Apple over Samsung, and it’s not even close
85% of teenagers have iPhones, according to a new survey

According to a new survey conducted by Piper Sandler Companies, teenagers still prefer Apple’s iPhone over Android devices like Samsung by a wide mile. The data is a bit surprising given that Samsung flagships, in particular, can more or less stand toe-to-toe with the iPhone these days. Still, Apple has long had a brand cache that other companies, no matter how hard they try or how much money they spend, can’t seem to match.

The survey in question fielded responses from 5,200 teens — with an average age of about 16 — across 41 states. When the dust settled, a whopping 85% of respondents indicated that they own an iPhone. That’s an absolutely staggering figure and underscores the strength of Apple’s brand amongst younger generations.
What’s more, the survey found that 88% of respondents indicated that they want an iPhone to be their next smartphone.
