About Apple ProRAW
On iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max with iOS 14.3 or later, you can take photos in Apple ProRAW, which gives you greater creative control when editing photos.

Apple ProRAW combines the information of a standard RAW format along with iPhone image processing, which gives you more flexibility when editing the exposure, color, and white balance in your photo. With iOS 14.3 or later, your iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max can capture images in ProRAW format using any of its cameras, including when also using the Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, or Night mode features.* You can edit ProRAW photos in the Photos app and other third-party photo apps.

ProRAW files are 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG files. If you store the files on your device, you might run out of space more quickly than you expect.
Use ProRAW with Photos and other apps
ProRAW uses the industry standard digital negative (DNG) file format, so you can open ProRAW files with apps that are compatible with DNG files. For the best experience, however, use apps that are compatible with ProRAW files, like the Photos app on your iPhone with iOS 14.3 or later or on a Mac with macOS Big Sur 11.1 or later.

When Apple announced the new iPhone 12 ($829 at Amazon) family in October, one way it differentiated the more expensive iPhone 12 Pro ($999 at Amazon) and 12 Pro Max from the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini was with Apple's new raw photo format.

It's called ProRaw and gives you the customization of a raw file infused with the iPhone's computationally photo smarts. Aside from the mention of ProRaw at the October event, not much was known about it. The release of the developer's beta of iOS 14.3 brings with it support for Apple ProRes photos and gives us more clarity about how it works.

The addition of ProRaw changes all of this. It will be native in the iOS camera app on the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, but it won't be on by default.
On the top right of the camera app, you'll see a new Raw button for quickly switching between ProRaw photos and JPEG (or HEIC) photos.

ProRaw works on all four iPhone 12 cameras and in Night Mode. It uses the widely supported Adobe Digital Negative, or DNG, file format and contains information for 12-bit color and support for 14 stops of dynamic range. Files are large, averaging about 25 megabytes.

MacOS and iOS both support and can convert ProRaw files, as well as apps like Dark Room and Pixelmator. You can edit ProRaw images in the Photos app.

Since the file is DNG, apps like Adobe Lightroom for iOS and VSCO will work, but will work better once they support ProRaw.

"We are partnering closely with Apple and are excited about the opportunities that ProRaw can afford our mutual customers," a representative for Adobe said. "We don't have any specifics that we can share at this time."

This week, Apple introduced iOS 14.3. Tucked in with its typical array of bug fixes and new features, the company rolled out its new ProRAW photo format for the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. It’s not on by default—you’ll have to go into Settings > Camera > Formats > Apple ProRAW to enable it—but it could open up a lot more potential from your smartphone photos once enabled.

ProRAW goes beyond the typical image info included in a normal raw file, however, because it includes Apple-specific data that relates back to its features like Smart HDR and Deep Fusion. That’s one of the big differentiators between Apple’s raw format and those that you’ll get from a typical DSLR.

Because ProRAW is still so specialized, Apple requires you to turn it on every time you open the camera app if you want it enabled. It’s a smart policy because ProRAW does have some real drawbacks.
You lose the ability to shoot bursts of photos, and many popular photo sharing apps like Instagram can’t handle the raw files [...]
What should you use to edit them?
Since it’s so early in the life cycle, full support is currently somewhat spotty. Because ProRAW uses the DNG format for its base, you can easily open them in Lightroom, Photoshop, and CaptureOne, but you may not necessarily be able to take advantage of all the editing features the format can afford you.

Darkroom photo editing app adds support for Apple’s new ProRAW format

The popular photo and video editing app Darkroom has been updated today with support for Apple’s new ProRAW photo format. ProRAW was first announced at Apple’s October event and it made its way to iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max users this week thanks to the release of iOS 14.3.

With today’s update to Darkroom, you can now import and edit ProRAW photos taken with iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple warns that each file in the ProRAW format will be approximately 25MB in size, but you get additional control over post-processing of the images.

Instagram is set to receive support for Apple's new ProRAW photo format today, according to a member of the team working on the app.
In a pretty innocuous tweet earlier, Instagram for iOS team member Tim Johnson announced the feature, saying that it's coming "this morning" but might "take a bit to propagate out."

Photographer Austin Mann recently explained why ProRAW is so great, although I doubt posting images to Instagram will show them off to their full potential.
