Apple has started to test its update for Apple Maps that brings more detailed information to the navigation app, with a small number of users spotting the new map data being used in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

During WWDC 2020, Apple announced it would be bringing its improved Apple Maps to more countries, expanding on its existing work in the United States. Its first international expansion, as part of iOS 14, will cover the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada, and would occur sometime later in 2020.

According to Justin O'Beirne, who has been keeping track of the update's rollout in different areas, there have been some sightings of the refreshed map for the UK.
Apple initially visited the UK and Ireland in June 2015 with its mapping vehicles, with the last subregions of each country traversed by May 2019.

Apple has been operating vehicles equipped with advanced sensors for some time, which are dedicated to collecting data to enhance Apple Maps. 9to5Mac has now learned exclusive details about how Apple uses these vehicles and manages such data.

Twitter user @YRH04E shared with us some internal Apple materials that reveal how the company operates those special cars with sensors and the protocols that the Apple Maps team must follow to capture images and other data across the streets.
Apple began collecting data using modified vans, but now field operators drive a white Subaru Impreza, which is internally known as “Ulysses.”

Once they’re on the road, the EyeDrive app on iPad tells the team where they should drive to capture data. The operator can check the images through the iPad in real-time and confirm if the capture looks good or if it has any issues.

At the end of the day, the systems are turned off and everything is safely saved. The car is once again inspected and the SSDs with captured data are immediately sent to Apple.
All that data is mainly used to enhance features like Flyover and Look Around, where users can explore 3D cities on Apple Maps. These vehicles are commonly seen in the United States, but Apple is slowly expanding them to Canada, Europe, and Japan.

Apple today officially launched its in-house mapping data in the United Kingdom and Ireland, after completing the rollout across the United States in 2019. The new map is rolling out now and should be available to all customers later this evening.

The new maps offer more detailed cartography and building shapes, more accurate navigation and Google Street View-esque ‘Look Around’ views in select cities.
With its revamped Apple Maps initiatives, Apple is using its own map data sourced from satellite imagery, as well as ground truth Apple Maps vehicles.

Today, Apple announced that Look Around is available in three cities across the UK & Ireland: London, Edinburgh and Dublin. If you are using Apple Maps on a device running iOS 13 or later, you should be able to see the Look Around binoculars icon when exploring London, for instance.

Apple has also rolled out several smaller features designed to make Maps better. Those who drive electric vehicles can take advantage of electric vehicle routing, which adds charging stops along a planned route based on current vehicle charge and charger type.

Maps users can now get real-time transit information, including up-to-date schedules, live departure and arrival times, and busses and trains' current locations. Currently, real-time transit is available in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and more.

Reported by MacRumors, Apple has expanded one of the best newer features of Apple Maps to a ton of new areas. Look Around, which allows you to virtually travel around the streets of a city, is now available in Denver, Colorado, Detroit, Michigan, and Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in the United States.

As noted by the report, the expansion has brought the number of areas you can virtually take a tour from your iPhone, iPad, and Mac to 22 cities and regions in the world.

At launch, Look Around was limited to a handful of cities, but now it is available in 22 cities and regions around the world. Apple maintains a list on its website, but Maps enthusiast Justin O'Beirne also has a more frequently updated list.

LiDAR-equipped Apple Maps vehicles are surveying select regions of Israel, New Zealand, and Singapore through early 2021, collecting street-level imagery and data, according to a list of locations maintained on Apple's website.

Apple will use the data collected to improve its Maps app and expand its Look Around feature beyond the five countries where it is currently supported, including parts of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Japan.
In some areas where streets are not easily accessible, Apple employees collect data using portable systems, such as a backpack with LiDAR.

Apple Maps users in Germany can now report accidents and other hazards for other drivers, according to a new report. While the feature was already available elsewhere, this is the first time it has come to the German version of Apple's map software.

First spotted by Macerkopf, the change allows people to report accidents and hazards using the Apple Maps app for the first time. Those who are driving can even report issues using Siri, too.
However, unlike in the United States, Germans cannot report speed cameras via the app. The only two options are for accidents and hazards no matter what method people use to make the report.

Using an iPhone or Mac, users can open Apple Maps and search for a popular location to see if parking information is available. Under the "More" menu, a button for parking opens an in-app Safari window to SpotHero's website that displays booking information.

Users can book parking by entering hourly or monthly times and proceeding with payment details.
Users can filter the results based on wheelchair accessibility, charging for electric vehicles, parking availability, and other criteria as first seen by MacRumors.

They'll do that through a new web portal at businessconnect.apple.com. After creating an Apple ID or logging in with an existing one, they can search through Apple's database of locations and claim theirs or create a new one from scratch.

Alongside that existing information, Business Connect offers a way to upload photos and set cover images and branding on location pages. Additionally, the specific available "Actions" on the card can be customized—for example, a grocery store can add an "Action" to order from the location on Instacart, or a venue can include an Action for reserving a parking spot on SpotHero.

Apple’s focus continues to expand
Historically, Apple has pulled in some of this data from Yelp, and that partnership continues; Yelp data will still populate many cards, and Yelp user reviews and photos will continue to appear in them.
This move nonetheless puts Apple in direct competition with Yelp and Google, splitting small business owners' and marketers' time and energy.

For large businesses with many locations, Apple will introduce a Business Connect API—this API will also be available to listing agencies.

At least for now, Apple isn't charging businesses to use any of these features, but they're part of a larger shift in the company to focus more on data, search, and services in addition to product experiences. The initial benefit for Apple is likely improved quality and trust for Siri and Maps search results in one of the most common uses for both, as well as greater perceived utility for both relative to offerings from Google and others.

According to their announcement, the new version focuses more on business locations. This means all those businesses can add new images, buttons/options, and promotions on their business page in Apple Store. With these options, Apple offers its users the possibility to seek other information, not just directions to that place, be it a hotel, a bar, a flat, or any other service whose information is available on Apple Maps.

This means that when you type a hotel address in Apple Maps, you will get information on the distance and directions on how to get there as well as its working hours, its rate and cost, the possibility to book a room or any other service they offer. There will also be a link to the service website and other social media accounts.
