Apple could soon launch its own search engine

There are signs that Apple is working on its own search engine that could compete with Google.

The Google search engine has always been preset on every iPhone, iPad and Mac, but it looks like Apple could replace Google with its own search engine.
The rumour isn't actually new and the signs are numerous.

The latest evidence comes from Jon Henshaw of Coywolf who claims that Apple may soon launch its own search engine.

He writes that changes in Spotlight Search in the iOS and iPadOS 14 betas, a significant update to its Applebot support page, and an increase in crawling from AppleBot, suggests that we could see an Apple search engine soon.
SearchEngineRoundTable also noted back in July 2020 that Apple had updated the 'about Applebot' help documentation page with information about how it ranks web results.

Alternatively Apple could offer a different search engine to Google as the default. It's already possible to choose between Bing, Yahoo and Duckduckgo via the Safari settings instead of Google. Currently Google is the preset, but that could change.
Bad news for Google?
Will this damage Google's position as the number one search engine? Probably not.

However, if iPhone search queries suddenly stopped being made via Google this could become a problem for Google. After all, iPhone users - especially in the US - are an important target group for the advertising-focused company.

Apple’s entry into the search engine market comes 11 years after Microsoft’s Bing made its debut, the only other noteworthy competitor to Google to date.
Bing is by no means a success story, despite what Microsoft’s PR team claims, and it continues to pale in comparison in terms of economic performance and market power to Google’s ubiquitous search platform.

Google’s dominance on internet search will not come to an end with Apple’s entry into the foray, but it would definitely weaken in the face of increasing consumer preference for privacy. Given that Google’s business model differs dramatically from Apple’s, it is likely that the search giant would have to learn to uncomfortably live with its rival’s search engine instead of pivoting to compete with it head on.

However, Apple uses other search engines like Microsoft’s Bing in the background, for Siri searches. It has also long been rumored that Siri and Spotlight searches are in part handled by a search engine developed by Apple itself. This idea is lent weight by the company’s occasional acquisition of search companies like Topsy Labs and Laserlike.

Until very recently, however, there have been no outward signs of progress, with experts suggesting that an Apple Search service is still years away as yet.

Apple Business Connect
There has, however, been one very recent development that does suggest Apple is preparing to go more head-to-head with Google: the launch earlier this month of Apple Business Connect.
