Hmm that's really a wild guess. AOMEI has every mean to control the limit date for activation. So I wouldn't bet too much on it but of course it may work.

You're right, the installation file is exactly the same, just renamed..
The registration key will only stop working, incase Aomei blocks it.

I got the free Pro version. It did take some time to receive the emails from them though.
I have used several backup programs and I like this one the best. To me it is much easier to use than most. The backup process does take some time but I always do it before bed so no issue as far as I am concerned.
    Great product!!

    See http://www.aomeitech.com/forum/disc...re-after-disk-restore-by-backupper-v3-2-winpe
This excerpt from the bug report serves as a warning to people using GPT system disks, including the strategy of testing the restore by first wiping the disk:

I don't know why AOMEI still doesn't implement the 4-partitions bakcup scheme for their so called "system backup" for a GPT secure boot OS. In UEFI secure boot, all 4 partitions: recovery, msr, EFI and C: are essential to get your system working 100%. In reality, AOMEI always omit some of the first 3 partitions, which potentially lead to problems after restoring the disk image to a new, blank HDD.
I emailed the tech support a few time regarding this problem, never get a response. I therefore don't use AOMEI for my system. I don't understand why they don't backup all 4 system partitions?

I may have a workaround : I perform full drive backup on my Win8.1 GPT PC andI was able to restore it to a fully working state after TMV2 managed somehow to erase all partitions but the Win_DRV one. I never use System Backup, always Drive Backup. With current external HDD sizes it's no longer an issue.

If you accidentally erase partitions, Partition Wizard Bootable CD Free Edition and other such tools can recover the partitions. This is because the partition data remains intact, and only track 1 is changed.

Notice that the poster in the Aomei forum tried full disk backup and then got a boot failure upon restore. Seems like the prudent thing to do is to test any backup software by wiping the disk.

In Horse Trainer's post he mentioned, "During backup, Backupper threw errors about the VSS service not being available, but proceeded OK". There is no mention about image Validation. It's possible there was a problem with the backup image as it was created without the VSS service being available. An offline backup should have been created too as it doesn't need VSS.

When VSS cannot start, which is the case on my old XP system, Backupper internal driver takes over and makes it so that the image is OK, I restored many times my PC with images created in such a way. I didn't even notice the issue until I updated to version 3.1 where the VSS error message is explicit.

    MerleOne, thanks for the information.

AOMEI ver 2.2 couldn't successfully restore an Entire Drive image of a UEFI system to a new, empty drive. AOMEI ver 2.5 was the first version that could successfully restore an Entire Drive image of a UEFI system to a new, empty drive.

I tried AOMEI Backupper Standard ver 3.2 with a Win10 UEFI system. An Entire Drive Backup image was created and Validated in Windows. No issues. The image was restored to a new, empty drive. (the Source drive was GPT and the target drive was MBR) No problems. AOMEI offers to convert the MBR disk to a GPT disk. If you don't click anything it does the conversion after a 10 second wait. (Because it has to be done) Win10 loaded fine. This was a WinPE restore.

Edit... the Linux boot disk only boots in MBR mode (which is a pain). It restores the 4 partitions but despite clicking OK on the MBR to GPT conversion, the conversion doesn't happen and Win10 doesn't boot.

Thanks. I suppose I could have tried that but I was wary of other damaged data, so it was safer to restore the full HDD, longer but supposedly safer. Also, when this happens, I don't always think clearly...

More info on the AOMEI Linux boot disk restore with failure of Win10 to boot. After the failed restore....

Diskpart can't convert the disk to GPT.

BIBM can convert the disk to GPT but Win10 still doesn't boot.

Prior to using the AOMEI Linux boot disk, boot a WinPE (a Win7, 8 or 10 DVD is OK) and run Diskpart

    clean
    convert gpt

Now boot the AOMEI Linux boot disk and the restore will result in a bootable Win10. Messy, but it works.

The AOMEI boot disk (non Linux) is interesting. It's based on the Recovery Environment, winRE.wim. So no download is needed. Out of interest I deleted winRE.wim from the Recovery partition. You are then requested to download the Windows ADK before you can make an AOMEI boot disk.

TeraByte Unlimited has a similar method of using winRE.wim to make a boot disk.

HorseTrainer updated his bug report on Backupper:
    http://aomeitech.com/forum/discussi...-disk-restore-by-backupper-v3-2-winpe#Item_15
"One thing I notice is that Macrium restores the disk GUID of the original, while Aomei does not."

To ensure that licenses stay activated, seems that the safe thing to do is to backup and restore the GUID of the disk, the GUID of each partition and the serial number of each partition. This could explain why sidrick gets failures with disk restore on win10 and why HorseTrainer gets failures with all restores on Win8.1 with Backupper.

I must be missing something because I can't get the AOMEI RE to boot in Windows 10. Perhaps it's because I only downloaded the PE Builder (v1.5) rather than having installed the entire program and then built the RE, but all that happens is I get an error screen and can proceed no further.

    prius04,

I downloaded and installed BackupperFull.exe (Standard ver 3.2).

    Is your system UEFI?

Yes it is, Brian. FWIW, I also had no luck with v1.4 of the Builder when I was running Win 8.1 so, frankly, I wasn't really expecting v1.5 to work.

    prius04,

I'm not familiar with the PE Builder but I'm downloading it now. Do you want to install and create an AOMEI boot disk or are you just testing?

I just tried PE Builder 1.5

Booting the USB flash drive in UEFI and MBR mode failed.

Thanks for giving it a shot, Brian. Personally, I was just doing some testing; it's not anything I really need. This thread, which I have followed sporadically for quite some time, simply piqued my curiosity.
