Yes, I was able to successfully access the “XeroBank Best Practices Guide.” It is obviously a work-in-progress, with several sections completely empty. I was also surprised that the tone of the document is quite ‘philosophical,’ imparting wisdom such as “Self-respect is of utmost importance,” “One man can change the world,” and “Be like the night.” I must admit that I wasn’t expecting instructions on how to become a “network ninja” – but, hoping for advice that was considerably more practical and pragmatic. Maybe as you continue work on this document, Steve, you can reduce the ‘philosophical’ and increase the ‘practical’?

I took the time (52 minutes) to view the video of Steve’s talk at DefCon (“DefCon 15 - T441 - Portable Privacy”), and highly recommend that others interested in XeroBank do likewise. While I might quibble with some of the points he makes in his presentation, the overall impression is that he is a highly competent individual who is deeply, sincerely, and honestly concerned about users' right to privacy.

Regrettably, Steve’s enthusiasm and pride-of-ownership in the products of XeroBank expressed in his posts in this thread can occasionally be perceived by some individuals as being ‘arrogant’ or motivated by ‘self-interest.’ After reviewing the video, I personally do not impute these attributes to him or to XeroBank. Take a look at the video before you make a judgment. You’ll be glad you did.

 

A thought occurred to me.

Has anyone (Steve?) ever tested Firefox's SOCKS5 implementation to verify that it properly accepts IPv6? (SOCKS 4 and 4a don't support IPv6, but http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1928.txt says SOCKS5 does.)

Steve's network.dns.disableIPv6=true setting would protect xB users against DNS resolution requests returning IPv6 IPs. But it wouldn't protect against direct IPv6 URL hits -- <IFRAME SRC="http://[ip:v6:address:here::]/hehe.html" TITLE="pwned">

I have no IPv6 systems handy to try this with.

But with Firefox configured to speak directly to Tor using SOCKS5 (or in my case, directly to my PuTTY SSH tunnel also using SOCKS5), I can only imagine three possible outcomes:

(a) Firefox does support IPv6 over SOCKS5 and passes the request to the SOCKS5 server (in Tor's case, the SOCKS5 server is Tor itself, and I assume that since Tor doesn't support IPv6, Tor itself would just silently ignore the IPv6 connection attempt and send no outgoing data);

(b) Firefox doesn't support IPv6 over SOCKS5 and refuses to pass the request to the SOCKS5 proxy (resulting in nothing happening, or a Firefox error message);

(c) Firefox doesn't support IPv6 over SOCKS5 and makes a direct internet connection to the IPv6 server address (bad, whether you use Tor or encrypted PuTTY SSH tunnels).

Seems that failover_timeout is only necessary when Proxy Auto-Config (PAC) is selected in Firefox instead of Manual configuration. And xB uses Manual. And I can't find any official documentation saying that network.proxy.backup.* even exist. (When it comes to the "secondary proxy" values Firefox reverts to if failover_timeout elapses, I'm assuming they're specified via PAC itself rather than via these, so I'm doubly confused about their purpose.)

network.proxy.share_proxy_settings - Why is this set "true?" According to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.proxy.share_proxy_settings, "true" means Firefox will use whatever is specified as its HTTP proxy for proxying all protocols (FTP, SSL, SOCKS). In your configuration, you leave the HTTP proxy setting blank and specify only a SOCKS proxy. Isn't this logically equivalent to "no proxy"? (xB clearly uses the proxy. I'm just trying to reconcile what the documentation officially says.)

plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types - Having difficulty understanding the necessity of this one. If all plug-in "activation" is prevented with mimetypes.rdf (i.e. if your mimetypes.rdf forces "save to disk" or something similarly safe on every possible format), then what purpose does using this option to disabling full-page viewing mode (as happens with Acrobat Reader) serve?

FTP over xB Browser & FireFTP

I have a question I think others might be interested in as well:

Does the xB Browser (v2.0.0.15a) handle FTP traffic over TOR as well? Would there be any high risk that the FTP would go from my real IP-number or would it be fail-safe?

And a bonus Question because you are always so good in answering

Could I try to install the FireFTP plug-in and play around without risking my real IP-number from the xB Browser?

The reason I'm asking so many simple questions is that I don't know how to check if the FTP traffic would be running over TOR or not.

Hmmm. FTP traffic can't speak SOCKS I don't think, and if you are using the free version of xb browser, then it wouldn't work. If you're a xerobank customer, it will do anonymous ftp.

well just took the plunge and joined but cant find where to set email up so any help would be apreciated also can anyone tell me if i use the xb brouser do i need to turn any java off or does the brouser do eveything for me thanks

Regarding the xB Browser available on the Xerobank.com website:

It's not working. I have installed the last version today, and keeps loading the Tor network forever. I am using the free version.

At first I thought was necessary to generate a Xerobank.ini file, acessing the:

\xB Browser\App\xBConfig.exe

file, and modifying some settings, therefore, creating this INI file. But that won't do any good. Looking into my old xB version (which is working), I realize that the old version is using these settings, while the last one don't have anything filled or selected:

I tried to apply these settings. They were saved, but not the "Wait Before..". Even if you select, the xBConfig file (from the last xB version) is not saving. Well, I deleted the INI file and restarted everything like was it before. No luck, again.

Then I removed xB and tried to install again. Same issue - keeps loading the first screen forever. Doesn't go anywhere.

And before you ask me, I am not using any kind of firewall at all, so there must be something wrong with the installation file.

I also noticed, while installing, some messages (along with several other ones) saying: Copy (place here several names of files) and one of them was "Copy failed". Since that screen was gone, I wasn't able to see why.

But this is very strange, since xB was indeed installed each time.

I am using Windows XP SP1, and for the record, all previous versions of xB were installed and worked. This must be the first time ever, I am not getting any response.

 

For the record, the xB Browser is finally working here, in the latest version available from xB's website. And I noticed the Tor network is faster now. Not sure if my internet updates have something to do with this, or was Steve's fault (he was always correcting things in the source code from one version to another, now finally I can use xB browser, it wasn't possible before, so I used the 2.010 version).

It's really recommended that you have at least 2 Mbit/s (DL) and 0.5 Mbit/s (UL). I always thought the Tor network was not going to perform better even if my broadband connection was faster (I believed the Tor network was not going to be faster, following the same speed rates). I was partially wrong... Firefox still have timeouts when accessing some pages, and Tor is still slow, but in general, I see a vast improvement, because a much better upload/rate is probably required based on the way the network operates (sending the same data stream back).

I only wish was possible to disable the anonymity check, while opening the browser.
