XP-SP3 on my desktop and win7 on my laptop. Will be using win7 on my desktop when the pc falls apart and has to be upgraded and when that doesn't happen per 4-14.
Sure, why dispose of a perfectly good desktop that still works after 7 years? I purchased a far more powerful Win7 desktop a couple of years ago, but continue to use both in tandem side by each on my desk. That way, when one develops a problem, I can use the other to trouble-shoot. To be honest, my old XP/sp3 system has developed a few hardware problems the last few years, but none I could not solve. A philosophical question: is it better to use the older XP system for internet surfing? It has less to lose if malware should brick it, but it is also a less secure system than Win7. Because neither system has ever been compromised, I choose to do most of my surfing with XP. (Maybe the question is moot, since I back up both systems to external HDs).
That's the difference between being safe in a practical sense (ie: against the current threat landscape) and being safe in a theoretical sense (ie: being secure against more than the current threat landscape).
Yes indeed. I call it "Computer, Heal Thyself". Having the 2nd pc there to research error messages and search for solutions is a must-have for me. And I am still using XP, but the more I run W7, the less I like XP. XP just seems (here's a technical term for ya...) clunkier.
Oops! Sorry, I forgot to include it but last time I checked it was already there! Any idea who did that?
XP Pro here on 4 machines. It does the job, so why change. The change will come with new hardware, not til then.
I wonder how long it will be before these same comments will be said about Win 7&8 And it just keeps repeating every time they bring out a new OS
I really enjoyed using XP, but when I bought a new computer that came with WIN7 I really found it to be like XP on steriods. I like 7 so much I wouldn't dream of upgrading to WIN8. Just like all the other prior versions, I am seeing XP users starting to have trouble installing new apps for lack of compatability. Probably more for lack of RAM than anything else I guess.
For those of you who have moved from Windows XP to Windows 7 did you install the Windows XP mode? If so, how did that work for you? I will be moving to Windows 7 but I have so many older programs I cringe to think that I may lose them. Programs like Microsoft Office 2002 and Microsoft FrontPage 2003 plus several really good Give Away Of The Day programs. Additionally, I understand that Windows 7 should be a clean install. By this I mean format the drive before installation. If this is the case I suppose a backup of your existing programs prior to the Windows 7 install then restore of the backup programs after the Windows 7 install. Am I correct in my thinking? John
