    Hi Mike

Was just curious. You mentioned that OA 'may' get a firewall sometime down the track. If so, would there be an option to just have outbound protection ? (for those of us that have hardware firewalls).

I've been wondering when a firewall would offer this, but haven't seen one yet (maybe there's some reason for it, but not being a programmer, I don't know of one).

I don't think you'd get any benefit from this. The downside of this is that when something potentially insecure needs to connect out (various Windows compoenents for things like file & print sharing, IRC, p2p, IM, etc etc), there would be no restrictive control to ensure that those apps are only doing what they are supposed to do.. unless you've got an external firewall (not just a router), this extra protection is worth it. It may not cover everything, but it can help quite a bit.

    Hi Vikorr,

I haven't started listing in detail all of the features that the OA firewall should have as yet, but I cannot see why we would not be including Outbound access control.

I have some ideas for how the FW will work, but I don't want to say anything until we have a nice working prototype. But, I promise - I'll put you on the list of alpha testers :)

My hardware firewall is a firewall, not just a router. I do seem to recall Mike saying somewhere that for things like svchost.exe rundll32.exe etc, that they'd program it to trust the process calling those exe's, not those exe's themselves (I may have misunderstood something you wrote, as I only have a basic understanding of how firewalls work).

Quite understand the first part, and the second part would be fine by me.

Mike or anyone can tell me where the logs are? The problem is still present.

    Hi zzz

You'll need to install the logging version - we have it as a separate download for security/privacy reasons; the logs it generates are very, very detailed.

    You'll find them in:

    Online Armor/logs
    Online Armor/Watchers

Please note - Watchers are VERY detailed; So, don't send/receive personal email or perform any unnecessary or potentially confidential tasks while you are running on the logging version. I may learn some things about you I don't want to know that way :D

    The download is here:

    www.tallemu.com/downloads/OnlineArmor_Win32_Setup_Logging.exe

At the end of the Safety Check Wizard, please ensure you turn *off* the auto updates (set to manual only) otherwise it'll grab the latest (not logging) version from the automatic updates server.

Thanks for your help with this.

    regards

    Mike

I installed it, ran the BT client and the desktop froze again. Prior to that I let OA update - now since I rebooted, OA won't start again.

    Hi zzz

I think you will need to remove OA completely, then just install the logging version - taking care to turn off updates. Otherwise, it will overinstall and no logs.

I'm monitoring the server from Australia (server is in the US) using a network monitoring system and I'm showing constant availability. Can you tell me / PM me or do a traceroute or something - I think it could be a problem at your end.

Anyone else having problems reaching the site? I've tried from a few different locations with no problems.

What were you trying to do when OA died?

Well, I'm guessing this is when I started a torrent and OA got hit with requests and desktop froze with OA at 99%

So, in this case - can you restart your PC - install the logging version - try to start your torrent (observe the crash) and then send me the logs?

Once I have the logs, I should be able to track it down

I think it may be easier if I get someone else to try reproduce the problem.

I'll let you know how it goes.

    Hi all,

We've solved the BT problem - it's in testing now and will be going out with the next service release of OA.

Have you looked into the problem with Admuncher yet? :)
