there might be something here, they are just some bookmarks i have -

i just found this for windows -
    http://mutable.net/blog/archive/2006/11/13/an-intelligent-backup-system-for-windows-part-1.aspx

i've got some spare HDDs and a HDD enclosure so i should do this too, maybe if you haven't used linux much but want to try it out we can use the same thing??

agood place to find solutions is delicious.com
    http://delicious.com/search?p=incremental+backup

    and digg.com
    http://digg.com/search?section=all&s=incremental+backup&x=0&y=0

and lifehacker.com, this search, below, on google gives some good ideas
    Code:
    site:[URL="http://lifehacker.com"]http://lifehacker.com[/URL] incremental backup
here's one of the things from the results -

    http://lifehacker.com/375666/back-up-while-youre-away-with-idlebackup

i'm definitely going to try one of these, i really need to make at least one backup, i've got so much stuff i need to backup because i've used this install for almost 2 years now and i've saved stuff most days!

yes but the free version cannot restore a system partition
    making it pretty much useless.

So additional suggestion's should assume "& restore" the unspoken given?

wow, i never thought there was quite a lot! thanks guys! :)

iceni, i've been using ubuntu, pclinuxos and a little slacking alternately with windows. and thanks for those link. I'll check them all out...

sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm particularly looking for something to backup the system partition. It seems that only DriveImageXML is the only candidate?
