Is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware a true antivirus?

No it is not and technically it shouldn't be listed in this AV Poll.

I agree and it's not the first time we've seen it on a Wilders poll.

I have different products on different machines but here goes.

    Avira
    Eset Smart Security
    Kaspersky Internet Security 2012
    Weboot Secure Anywhere

This is between both work and home machines.

Hi, I've been putting the AV polls together for a few years now. In reality, the AV poll should probably be called an AW (anti-malware) poll because it more realistically reflects what the majority of AVs actually do, what the major threat vectors are, how people use security products, etc. Although if they did change their names to AW, we'd have some interesting names (KAW, NAW, PAW).

Seeing as how it's time that someone else pick up the creation of the bi-annual (or whatever time period you'd like to use), this is the last AV poll I'll create. So, someone please create the next AV or AW poll when it's time (i.e., whenever you deem fit) and then you can decide what should or should not be included.

    @ InfinityAz ...

This looks like a good time to say thanks for the fine job, man.

It seems to be human nature around these parts for some people to complain offer advice about how a poll should have been created, but as I discovered with a recent poll I put together, they can be quite time consuming and require a fair degree of research. And make no mistake, no matter who creates the next one, there will be folks chiming in about how it should have been done. :)

By the way, MBAM certainly has made a good showing for itself in this poll, no matter how someone wishes to classify it.

Again, thanks for putting these together for the last few years. :thumb:

    My thanks too, InfinityAz.
I can only assume that it must take a lot of thought to compile this poll, and it is appreciated.

Surely no-one took offence simply because I asked the question about Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It was only a question.

No, I did not take offense. It's just time for someone else to take it over. And you're welcome to all who offered thanks.

    None.

When I did use AV in the past, I've always favored the ones that were free and felt light on my system. I really liked Avira Personal Edition Classic at 1 point in time.

Same here. Since I never got infected anyway a couple percentage points on some subjective test was far less important than the footprint to me. Avira always ran light for me. So did Nod32. I found Avast heavier, and Kaspersky quite heavy.

Got Avast! free. MBAM free is an antimalware so I didn't vote for it.

I would never feel safe without an Antivirus

that's how I've always used to use my PC

I agree, Sandboxie is nice but it's no replacement for an AV.

Are we going to split the AVs Poll into free & paid next year? I think it would offer members & visitors a better insight.

I don't use one, but if I did, here on XP I'd just use the full CIS suite.

On Win7, I'd use MSE. Since it's integrated it's light and a low potential for conflict. It doesn't run light on XP though, for some reason. I'd especially use only it on 64-bit, since it's likely it's best suited to work around the kernel-hooking limitation.

I'm all about light footprint & low chance for conflicts. When your odds of being infected are remote to begin with, that's all far more important than a few percentage points of detection rates on some test using subjective sample sizes anyway.

And I'd never use an AV with a bunch of features, namely web scanning. Just give me on-access file scanning (file shield/guard, for you Avast/Avira users). And spare me the bloat that will likely just overlap/conflict with other things.

At the moment I'm using Comodo AV to complement Sandboxie.
I think this AV has finally come of age and Defense+ is the quietest HIPS around.
I still consider Sandboxie to be the backbone of my security though.
