Please see this report. While Symantec’s share of the anti-virus market continues to dominate at 52% in 2009, the competitive landscape is becoming more challenging -- which is good, since more competition drives innovation.

If Symantec have aprox ~50% of the market, their 'Sonar' system will be hell of a strong! Can't wait to see the next dynamic test posted by AV-C. Symantec was on top in the latest dynamic test. I think they'll be on top again.

According to Forbes - in whole 2008 Symantec had 39% market share .

I read another article but kill me , I really can't find the link now where Microsoft is number 1 , Symantec - number 5 , McAfee - number 11 , following Trend ... Kaspersky ...
This was about all software companies , not just security vendors . As for Security - Symantec was No.1 , McAfee - 2nd , 3rd was Trend , following Kaspersky (I think it was 79th in all software companies). Panda was among these 100 but I can't remember what number . ESET was missing from the 100th.

Cloud technology favors the AVs having the most Users.

    Then, I wonder why Symantec,
which has the most Users (= Higher Sales =
    Higher Market Share),
is Not always the Best in the Comparative Tests...

Since Symantec have Norton Antivirus with its cloud Sonar system, and 40-50% of the AV users involved, it looks ridiciously strong. It was ranked 1st on latest dynamic test on AV-C. I look forward to the next dynamic test on AV-C. I wish it had the same heuristic settings as Prevx and be as light as Prevx, then I'd consider using it.

I have used both, and it is pretty close to being as light.

As measured by revenue (not market share), this source may be helpful: Global Software Top 100 - Edition 2009.

Interesting question -- you may wish to consider starting a separate thread about how the size of the user community impacts the quality of malware protection?

That's my only concern about Prevx. Prevx is a very well made software. Light, stable, with a great behavior blocker. But it's a cloud app, so it depends a lot on market share to keep detection rates high. And Prevx is not a popular software.

Did you know that most normal users don't really contribute to cloud technology?
They just get infected and not know of it, until something goes horribly wrong. Then tech guy, and maybe re-installation. Doubt they'll ever send anything useful to Symantec, which ignores almost everything anyhow.

This is a kinda big misunderstanding, if a misunderstanding at all... they're using the information that's collected and submitted automatically, in other words their Community-feature, which has been there since 2006 or 2007. That's how they were able to get a good start with Quorum.

What you're talking about is actually the same for ALL companies; it's only the techie and dedicated people who take their time to submit information to the company manually, so... I'd say you're stating the obvious here.

"I wish it had the same heuristic settings as Prevx and be as light as Prevx, then I'd consider using it."

    - For me it works faster with any other AV since Prevx and its "analysis" kicks in more than often. This has been my grudge since EDGE's initial release.

While it is true that some anti-malware applications (such as Norton Internet Security) allow users to opt-out of participating in the in-the-cloud community, it appears that most choose not to do so. Symantec, for example, reports having 50 million users worldwide.

Are you sure that the “5 million users worldwide” reported by Prevx is exclusive of the quantity of “free users”? I have always assumed that the “5 million” number was the total of both paid and free users. I also assumed that the definition of "users" included employees of corporations that are using Prevx, too -- i.e., it is not a count of "consumers." Can you clarify these points?

P.S.: Triple Helix, congratulations on the upgrade of your status to “Prevx Forum Helper”! :)
