Apparently the paid version is not so easy to obtain outside of Europe either. Nope compete with the other products or fade away. I am talking more than just technical capability by the way.

    Thanks

AntiVir 7 looks interesting. Although settings do look a bit too complicated with bad touch for nice & productive GUI. I especially don't like the hiearchical arrangement of the settings. It would be better to make few subcategories and add settings on the right panel instead. Status page also looks very confusing with data here and there without any logical arrangement.

Good thing is that you don't need to watch 2 icons just because you want to use Scheduler/Auto updater. Updater is also much easier to configure, although 24h intervals are a bit too long imo. 4h maximum is a logical choice, although i prefer round the clock 1h intervals. Updating went smooth and very fast although there was around 4.5MB of updates...

It also passed a quick spyware check with 100% deflection. IE6 was used on questionable sites. I also belive AntiVir 7 is using improved heuristics although i can't check that...

And they will stay around for, because they provide a free anti-virus solution to those that either won't or can't pay for one and as long as they provide a free version, they will still have users all over the world.

You are sadly correct, but it is a shame that people will settle for mediocrity in the area that I have been talking about for years now. I guess that perhaps I have been talking to the wall. I guess I should except this, but damn I though there would be a least a few stout hearted individuals who would not settle for crap!

    Thanks

There is no beta out yet with the new heuristics.

Wildman, we could easily double the amount of download servers and still they would be at 100% load after a release. There was a release last friday (6.32.0.51), this is why the servers are currently flodded again.
Adding more servers won't really help and is *very* expensive. The propper solution is to reduce the size of the release packages which we are working on (-> AV7). Together with incremental VDF and hopefully incremental AVREP.DLL soon, the single file updating should finally lower the server load.

I think 1 hour checks are fine for now. 15 minutes is bare minimum just to prevent users from setting 1 minute checks and litterally DDoS their servers...

    :p Show Me!

I for some reason do not believe anything you say any more. This has been going on for way to long, either fix it once and for all, or be honest about the situation and admit it is beyond your ability to adequately resolve this issue. You have told us before that this would get better, but for some reason this has yet to occur. I don't know about others, but for me it is the what I indicated above.

    Thanks

Wildman, i don't get something. If you hate AntiVir so much why don't you simply leave it alone? I can see you're the only one haven't server problems.
In fact i don't even know what's you're problem anymore. Dialup is slow no matter what you do or which app you use...

I agree that if Wildman is not happy with AntiVir he should walk away from the program.

BUT he is not the only one having problems with the servers and the AntiVir Classic problems are not only with dial-up.

I have tried ALL of the free AV's and a LARGE number of the commercial scanners and AntiVir Free Edition is the ONLY AV that I have used that had continual connection problems due to server non-availabilty.

At work we installed the free version on a number of test Workstations with a very fast cable connection and for most of the day(in the UK) we could not connect to the Servers. And this was seen over a 9 day period.

HBDEV are obviously providing this free version to entice users to their commercial products. BUT in its present "crippled" state it is not a good advertisement for their paid products. Users will assume that server availability is just as bad with the commercial versions.

In this regards it would be a good idea if the Premium Edition was available as a trial version so that the different and presumably better "Exclusive Download Server" could be assessed.

:p Quiet a few say walk away. O.k., if the lot of you are willing to put up with the crap server(s) of AntiVir/Classic, I guess I'll do that. Over the years I have been called quiet a few things, but at least I tried to be honest about this situation. I can't say that the lot of you were always the same. The only thing I ask is that a warning be given to new users of AntiVir/Classic, that they may encounter difficulty in keeping the product up to date, and depending upon where they reside may have to do the updating during the middle of the night. To me that is B.S., but if you all want to put up with B.S., then I guess that is what you will do. I am disappointed in a few of you, I thought you were made of sterner stuff than that.

    Thanks

    Re: Andover Incremental VD-Update Beta

Wrong! I have very rarely had any problems with AVG, and if I have they have been resolved in a very expeditious manner. Sorry but I can not say the same for AntiVir/Classic!

    Thanks

If I was someone who was using the free version of Antivir and experienced the problems that you have had, and decided to BUY a Antivirus product. That product would not be Antivir. The best way to punish a company that YOU perceive as providing shoddy service is to withhold your wallet and hit them where it counts. As Blackcat says people who are willing to spend cash will make assumptions about the pay version based on the free.

I installed antivir free the other day as a on demand scanner. I've only did 2 updates with it. I didn't have any problem at all getting the updates. I'm on cable internet, but the slowest,128k. Guess I've been lucky :)

Both updates went smooth and fast. This isn't the first time I've used antivir as a on demand scanner. I've used it in the past, and I never had any trouble getting updates. The updates are pretty big. Sorry to hear about all your problems with antivir wildman.

Why do i have the feeling that your type of reply to Stefan bounces the borders? I mean hey, first you should reread what you wrote before you press the Submit Reply button. With your first sentence you're saying that Stefan is a liar. You should keep in mind that Stefan is not Antivir alone, he's just trying to give help here (for free) in the wildersforum. As Developer or Researcher you are NOT ENTIDLED to make Release Dates or announcements public. You can only give a "private" view of the point to it. Such things having all it's own route. So don't blame Stefan here as "liar". Otherwise you might get in trouble with me too. We know each other very well, and just believe me he's trying his best.

:p The performance of the server(s) or should I say lack of performance over an extended period of time would tend to lead credence to what I say. Now correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Stefan previously indicate that the situation with the server(s) would improve? Well sorry but I have yet to see any significant improvement in that area. Now if this upsets you, then I am sorry, but that is my take on this situation. I do read what I post, and have stated from the start that I am blunt, and do not sugar coat anything, I by the way make no apology for this either. Stefan should indicate that it may yet be a long time before this situation is adequately taken care of, if it ever is, that I would respect, but not a dirtied of wait it will get better with no substance to support that allegation.

    Thanks
    Wildman

Wildman, I carefully explained why the server are still on heavy load even after incremental VDF updating was introduced (and actually they are indeed more accessible as I can see from the server logs). And I explained why there are not going to be more servers right now. I explained what H+BEDV is going to do to reduce the size of the release packages and as Michael pointed out I am not free to give away any release dates. That is standard policy with any company, not just H+BEDV. So what else do you expect to hear?

On the other hand, even if the servers would be ok I bet you still would not be satisfied. Maybe the color if the icons isn't your liking aswell?

    Mr. Kurtzhals,
I have to disagree with you. I think Wildman likes your software very much. In fact he has stated many times how light it runs on his machine, and we know the detection rate is good. I'm seems to me his posts are a rather awkward way of trying to "goad" you into resolving the issues he is having with it. I have to admit though, that the consistency and tone of his responses can be amusing at times. I mean - the man's on a mission! Or as they say, "Hell hath no fury like a man scorned".

If it is not one thing it is something else that keeps the server(s) overloaded. What I would like to hear is that H+BED is the only company who has yet to adequately resolve the problems in this area, and that while you indicated the problem should have been resolved with the release of incremental updating, that has not proved to actually have been the case. I also would like to "see" a warning on AntiVir/Classic that keeping it up to date could be difficult and that access to the server(s) to accomplish this could require one to try and accomplish it in the middle of the night depending upon where one resides. I would also like to hear you say that this situation is yet to be completely and adequately resolved.

The post about me being on a mission would be as close to the truth as one has come yet. For those who have had no or little difficulty with the server(s) this may not seem to be that important, however for us that have it is. For those who can remember back that far, I used to be a staunch supporter of AntiVir, I even argued with Paul Wilder over AntiVir. (Paul Wilder the individual whose name appears on this forum), When the server(s) started being a problem, and when they indicated the situation would be taken care of, and after a very long time this is still going on, well I went on a mission. I guess they pushed every button I have as far as integrity went, and they still continue to hint the problem will be taken care of. As I said in a previous post it is now "show me". I have written numerous post on this subject, and in each one I have tried to be as honest as I possibly could have been, I perceive however that others have not always been like wise. Yes I rant and rave, and yes I have not always been "politically correct", but I have stated that fact from very early on also. I have also said that Stefan was the only one from H+BEDV who would even address this issue, and for that I do thank him, but please do not try and "white wash" the issue, that just has a tendency to piss me off.

    Thanks
    Wildman

Ah well, I give up. Reading anything about AntiVir here at Wilders has become very unpleasant. Why? Because every thread on AntiVir is chopped to pieces by Wildman's repetitive rants every 2 or 3 posts. I have any number of satisfied users who have NO problem whatsoever with downloading AVPE's updates. If Wildman lived in Europe or the UK I could understand his problem, but he lives in USA where there is daily a ~4 hour window of easy server access.

Wildman has a right to express his opinions, of course. But after having said essentially the SAME thing over & over, might he not have a little consideration for those who wish to actually discuss AVPE and who do not want further to discuss Wildman's poersistent rants?

I have had some of my posts deleted by Mods for being far less critical than Wildman. I have asked a Mod to intervene in this thread, but to no avail. Evidently criticism of an AV is welcomed just as long as *you know which* in-house AV isn't the one being criticized.

I imagine my post here will be very short-lived. No problem. Life goes on.

bellgamin, even though wildmans replys and post's bother you he does have the same right as you do to post his thoughts and feelings on a given subject as long as it remains in the outline of the TOS. It would probably be to your advantage to just ignore his post's.
