Google is working on its own implementation of Airdrop, Apple’s popular device to device file sharing service.

The feature would replace the OEM-specific implementations from the likes of Huawei and Samsung, and Google plans to roll it out via Google Play Services, meaning it will suddenly be near ubiquitous.
Of course ubiquitous on phones still leaves the feature missing on many platforms the average person use, but the good news is that Google appears to be planning to include PC, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS in the sharing party.

This is according to a recent Chrome Gerrit submission, and it appears the feature will need the Chrome browser installed on Linux, Windows and MacOS.

I assume this is different from Google Files. We use Google Files to transfer files between phones and it's about 20 times faster than Bluetooth.

Android's long-awaited Nearby Sharing may be just about ready.
The feature, which allows you to share files between Android devices quickly, easily, and wirelessly, has been compared to Apple's AirDrop, and Google has confirmed to us that a beta test for Nearby Sharing is actively rolling out via the Play Services beta. We've also managed to snag a quick hands-on to show you how it works.

Nearby Sharing may appear slightly differently depending on the type of content you try to share.
Note that Nearby Share works for both files like photos or videos, as well as other shareable content like Tweets and URLs. It probably works with a lot of things.

Google tells us that Nearby Share is currently in limited testing via the Play Services beta:

"We’re currently conducting a beta test of a new Nearby Share feature that we plan to share more information on in the future. Our goal is to launch the feature with support for Android 6+ devices as well as other platforms."
While opting-in on the Play Services beta is required, there's also a server-side component for the test right now, so you may not get it right away. Last month, it was discovered that Google was hard at work on bringing Android’s answer to AirDrop, Nearby Sharing, to Chrome OS and Google Chrome for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Now the feature has begun to appear for some on Chrome OS Canary.

With its arrival in Google Chrome, it became clear that Google has much larger ambitions for folks to share between phones, laptops, desktops, and tablets.
As spotted by Chrome Story, Nearby Sharing has begun to work in Chrome OS, but not the way you might expect.

For the time being, it’s only appeared in Chrome OS Canary and seems to directly use Android’s version of Nearby Sharing, right down the same UI available on phones today. [...] on our own Chromebook with Chrome OS Canary, but even on the newest Google Play Services beta, we could not get Nearby Sharing to appear.

For now, we’re not sure whether Chrome OS will continue to rely on Android’s version of Nearby Sharing or if it will eventually work using the native versions coming soon for Windows, Mac, and Linux, which are still a work-in-progress.

Google’s Nearby Share could become available for all Android smartphones in August

Google recently rolled out its AirDrop competitor, Nearby Share in the Play Services beta.
And the company has since then been testing the features with beta testers, but now, it seems that Google’s AirDrop competitor is almost ready for the prime time as the company is said to be bringing the file-sharing feature to every Android device running Android 6+, or at least that’s what the company told Android OEMs.

Google told OEMs that Nearby Share, Google's AirDrop-like file-sharing service, rolls out to all Android (6.0+) devices in August.
Can't confirm if that's the plan as of now, but this info came from a recent source.

Besides Android, Google is planning to bring Nearby Share to other major platforms such as macOS, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. While the feature is yet to become available for users on macOS, Windows, and Linux, the Nearby Share file-sharing feature has recently been added to Linux.

Google’s AirDrop competitor that’s ‘Nearby Share’ has been available for select Android smartphones via Play Services beta for months, and the company recently added the feature to ChromeOS. And now, Google is bringing the feature to Windows via the Chrome browser.

For those who are not familiar with the feature, Google’s Nearby Share is a feature that allows you to send any file to other devices that support Google’s file-sharing feature. Both the devices must have Bluetooth enabled in order for the feature to transfer a file.
Windows users can now use Google’s new file sharing feature and in order to do that, you’ll need to install Chrome Canary or Dev.

Nearby Share is expected to be available for every Android smartphone running Android 6+ next month, though we don’t know the exact date. At this moment, you can try the feature in ChromeOS, Windows, and select Android smartphones, but we also expect the feature to be available for Mac and Linux users via the Chrome browser soon.

After some time as a limited beta, which recently expanded to more testers, Google has today announced that it is rolling out Nearby Share – an AirDrop competitor – to Android 6.0 phones and newer. The search giant says that the feature has been in development for years and that it has been a highly requested feature. The feature lets users easily share “files, links, pictures, and more” with other Android users.

The company says that the feature negates the need to go through the long process of searching for a contact, selecting files, and other steps when users want to share files or other content with someone in close proximity.

Google to update Nearby Share so you don't need to approve transfers on your own devices

Google has announced that it’s launching a new update for Nearby Share for devices running Android 6 and above. It will be rolling out to devices in the coming weeks and will allow you to share content between your own devices that you have that are logged in with a Google account, without having to approve the transfer.

Nearby Share is available on Android phones and tablets, as well as Chrome OS devices. The company said it’s working behind the scenes to expand the range of devices that support Nearby Share, with ambitions to bring it to platforms like Windows over time.

The reason the service is called Nearby Share is that there are a range of ways to send files and content than just over the internet. It also supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, UWB, and WebRTC to automatically find the most efficient way to transfer files.

Nearby Share allows you to send content between your own devices seamlessly, but will also enable you to share content with other people, if you want to.
