The beta version of Android 11, the next version of Google's operating system for mobile devices, comes with lots of security and privacy changes designed to allow the OS to protect users' data from malicious attacks.

On the privacy side, the new Android release will come with one-time permissions, automated permissions reset, and scope storage enforcement.
When it comes to security updates, Android 11 will immediately encrypt the users' data after over-the-air (OTA) updates without requiring user credentials input.

"Every Android release has new privacy and security controls that let you decide how and when data on your device is shared," Google Android Engineering VP Dave Burke said. "Android 11 has even more granular controls for the most sensitive permissions."
Android 11 Beta is already available for development, testing, and feedback, and users with Pixel 2, 3, 3a, or 4 devices can try it right now.

Regarding security updates, the users' data will be encrypted right after the device reboots following an OTA update, without requiring them to input their credentials.

"After the device receives an OTA update and restarts, the Credential Encrypted keys that are placed in credential-protected storage are immediately available for File-Based Encryption (FBE) operations," Google says.
Android 11 will also block access to the users' app usage information until the device is unlocked for the first time after it restarts or the users switch to their accounts. [...]

With every big new OS version there are countless under-the-hood upgrades that will go unnoticed by regular users but could have a positive impact on their experience. Android 11 will be no different, and we've spotted one such small but potentially important new feature in Google's developer documentation for the upcoming release.

Starting in Android 11, apps will be able to grant per-process network access.
By limiting network access to only those processes that explicitly need it, the possibility that a bug could cause an app to erroneously upload user data is reduced, which in turn prevents against inadvertent data leaks.

What about the official, consumer-ready Android 11 release date? Google may have accidentally leaked the official Android 11 release date in its Smart Home Summit video on YouTube. According to a Google exec, we can expect the Android 11 release date to be September 8, 2020.

Google later reached out to Android Authority to claim that this rumored launch date was an error, and that the official release date has yet to be finalized. However, this rumored date fits in with Google’s projected timeline for its Android 11 releases.

Another Android 11 trade-off has emerged, this time taking away the ability for users to select third-party camera apps to take pictures or videos on behalf of other apps, forcing users to rely only on the built-in camera app.

Three specific intents will cease to work like they used to, including: VIDEO_CAPTURE, IMAGE_CAPTURE, and IMAGE_CAPTURE_SECURE. Android 11 will now automatically provide the pre-installed camera app to perform these actions without ever searching for other apps to fill the role.
Google describes the change in a list of new behaviors in Android 11, and further confirmed it in the Issue Tracker. Privacy and security are cited as the reason, but there's no discussion about what exactly made those intents dangerous.

After seven beta releases starting back in February, the final release of Android 11 is here. Of course, Google is shipping day-one Android 11 updates for the Pixel phones (most likely for the Pixel 2 and up), but that's not all. The real shocker of Google's blog post is that we can expect day-one updates from more than just Google. The company says "Android 11 will begin rolling out today on select Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, and realme phones."

Today's release shows that some OEMs are getting better at releasing timely Android 11 updates, but as always, there will be stragglers. Expect the day-one devices to be on a rollout plan that could take a week or two to hit everyone, while slower manufacturers will take months to get Android 11 out to flagship devices.

Google starts uploading the Android 11 source code to AOSP

Google has officially released the stable version of Android 11 for its range of Pixel smartphones going back to the Pixel 2. The much-anticipated software update sports a range of exciting new features, such as conversation bubbles, a screen recorder, quick access to smart home controls in the power menu, one-time permission prompts, and much more.

Now, the software giant is starting to upload the Android 11 source code onto the Android Open Source Project website.
Google uploads the source code for every major Android release under the Apache License version 2.0.

Another imperceptible but important update is the ability to set one-time app permissions for things like location and camera access. This way, you can have greater control over what apps are following you in the background. Plus, if you haven’t used an app in a few months, its permissions will automatically reset and it will have to request access when you open it again.

Google has now confirmed that the new edition of Android Go based on Android 11 is now ready for budget devices. The firm also outlined the improvements made to the stripped-down Android build over the previous iteration.

For starters, tweaks are coming to notification handling and user navigation. Google’s swipe-based gesture system is now standard on the OS and should speed up swiping through menus on devices with larger displays.

And if you haven’t used an app for an extended period of time, app permissions will “auto-reset” and you will immediately receive a notification of the change. You can always choose to re-grant the app permissions the next time you open the app.

Permissions removed notification
One of our readers (Thanks: Tiuri) received a notification on a device running Android 11 alerting them that, as per the above change, permissions for some apps had been revoked due to lack of use. So, now we finally know what this process looks like end-to-end.

Other cases, like Google Fit and OneDrive, show that Android 11 has revoked basic permissions those apps would need to work. Hopefully, none of this ends up being a problem, though our tipster didn't claim to be having any trouble.
Our tipster tells us they didn't actually enable the per-app setting to automatically revoke permissions, and I can confirm that the setting to automatically revoke permissions appears to be enabled by default on my devices running Android 11.
