In what could be a move to broden its attack on rival chipmakers Intel and Nvidia, the Wall Street Journal reports that AMD is in advanced talks to buy FPGA-maker Xilinx in a deal that could top $30 billion. The talks are said to have resumed after a recent pause, so it's unclear if they will result in a successful acquisition, but a decision could come as early as next week. We've reached out to AMD for comment and will update accordingly.

Xilinx is primarily known for its FPGA products.
FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) are semiconductor devices that can be rapidly reconfigured on the fly. They offer certain advantages over other types of devices, like CPUs and GPUs, in a wide variety of workloads.

As if the semiconductor industry wasn’t already undergoing seismic changes, a new report states that AMD is looking to seal a deal to acquire programmable chipmaker Xilinx for more than $30 billion.
AMD’s stock price was down by more than 3 percent late Friday morning while Xilinx’s stock was up by more than 12 percent.

What follows are five big things to know about the rumored deal as well as the positions of AMD and Xilinx in the data centre market, IT channel and beyond.
What we know about the deal
The Wall Street Journal first reported on the acquisition talks between AMD and Xilinx on Thursday night, saying that the deal could be valued at more than $30 billion.

Veteran semiconductor reporter Charlie Demerjian said on Twitter that the deal has “been in the works for a long time” and that he had first heard about it roughly two years ago.

Xilinx is diving deep into the IT channel
Xilinx has recently started to work more closely with IT solution provider companies that have traditionally worked with Intel and AMD on server deployments.

After weeks of speculation, AMD has confirmed that they will be acquiring Xilinx for $35 billion, adding FPGAs into the CPU giant's technological portfolio. This deal will be an all-stock transaction, using AMD's high share price to fund the acquisition.

When combined, AMD and Xilinx will have a Total Addressable Market (TAM) of $110 billion, over 13,000 engineers and annual R&D investment of over $2.7 billion. This deal will intensify AMD's battle with Intel within the data center market, giving AMD new product options while offering Xilinx a stronger brand name and greater access to customers.

AMD Completes Its Acquisition Of Xilinx

As was expected with last week AMD receiving all necessary regulatory approvals for its acquisition of Xilinx, today the deal successfully closed.

AMD has completed its acquisition of Xilinx on Valentine's Day. AMD hopes this semiconductor mega deal will further cement it as "the industry's high performance and adaptive computing leader."

Xilinx is becoming the AMD Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group (AECG), led by former Xilinx CEO Victor Peng.
