At the Citi 2019 Global Technology Conference, Jason Grebe, Intel's Cloud Platforms and Technology Group corporate vice president and general manager, noted that the chipmaker has lost some market share.

"As we have gone through the supply issue kind of in the last six to 12 months on the PC side, we had to walk away from some low-end mobile share as well as some channel desktop share," said Grebe.
With third-gen Ryzens out in the wild, AMD looks in a position to suck up more of the chip market that used to have Intel's colours firmly over it.
But Grebe said Intel will be "more aggressive" in order to swipe back ground it lost to its rival.

But intense rivalry in the CPU arena, after a period where Intel has arguably stagnated after holding sway across pretty much all of the processor market, means the PC world has two chip makers grafting to come out with the next big thing in CPUs.

All those years when Intel mercilessly milked their desktop cash-cow with glacial improvements, and limited mobile cores and memory, have left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Glad to see the server components are also competitive, I enjoyed some very cheap Xeon server pulls to build a decent workstation without the Intel premium.

Long live the competition.

What just happened? It’s been over a month since AMD revealed its Epyc Rome server CPUs, and we’re still learning what “the world’s fastest x86 processors” are capable of. Video and image tech firm Beamr says it has achieved real-time 8K HEVC encoding—a world’s first—using a single Epyc 7742.

Not only was the chip able to encode the 8K footage in real-time at 79 frames per second, but it also did so with 10-bit color for HDR. Beamr’s encoding software takes full advantage of the Epyc 7742 by utilizing all of its 64 cores.
AMD writes that the quality level of the encoding makes it suitable for live linear broadcast-level streaming, premium VOD entertainment services such as Netflix, and cloud gaming content streaming (Google Stadia, Microsoft’s xCloud, etc.).

With 4K only now becoming mainstream, we’ve still got a while before 8K starts making its way into homes.

While there's been little official word on AMD's 3rd-generation Threadripper chips, the chip has made an appearance over on Geekbench. And while the results suggest that this chip may not deliver the stratospheric improvements that the 2nd-gen chip did compared to the original silicon, it's more than enough to stay ahead of Intel's flagship chip.

But when it comes to multi-core, the Threadripper 3000's score of 23,015 [...] and leaves the i9-9900K with its score of 8,726 in its dust.
Some back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that based on this benchmark that the Threadripper 3000 is some 70 percent faster than the Threadripper 2990WX. However, as usual, caution is needed when trying to extrapolate benchmark results and translate them into real-world performance.

We hope you weren't determined to build an all-out AMD gaming rig in September. AMD has delayed the release of its 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X processor by two months to sometime in November. The company wants to meet "strong demand" for the highly parallel CPU, the company said in a statement to AnandTech.

The statement also revealed that the third-generation Ryzen Threadripper will arrive at the same time. AMD was coy about just what to expect from these parts, but it's safe to presume there will be an abundance of cores (up to 48) and a host of performance improvements thanks to the denser 7-nanometer manufacturing process.

In brief: AMD has been making huge strides recently with its well-received products, allowing the company to claw back market share from Intel.

A report from market analyst firm Mercury Research shows that AMD is experiencing growth in all segments of the industry, thanks in no small part to its popular 7nm Ryzen 3000 processors. Team red is still far behind Chipzilla overall, but it’s steadily stealing market share away from its rival.
In the desktop CPU segment, AMD has seen its market unit share increase every quarter since Q2 2017. It now stands at 18 percent, marking a 5 percent year-over-year increase and a 0.9 percent jump from the previous quarter.

It’s a similar story in the server market, where AMD now holds a 4.3 percent share, representing a 2.74 percent YoY increase.
AMD’s mobile processors are also heading in the right direction—it now holds a 14.7 percent market share.

Why it matters: We know that AMD has been clawing back CPU market share from Intel since its Zen architecture arrived two years ago, and that fact is reflected in Amazon’s sales. In the retailer’s list of best-selling processors, AMD takes 8 out of the top 10 spots.

In Amazon’s US chart of its most popular processors, AMD’s Ryzen 7 2700X takes the top position. The 8-core/16-thread processor is down to just $159 for Black Friday, which works out at just under $20 per core. It’s followed by the Ryzen 5 2600 in second with the Ryzen 5 3600 in third.
Intel’s highest position is number four with the 6-core/6-thread Core i5-9600K (cheapest price: $228), while its only other product in the top ten is the 8-core/16-thread Core i9-9900K in sixth.

AMD has been dominating Amazon’s list for quite some time now, which shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, given the excellent performance and price offered by the company’s products.

What just happened? Yet another feather in AMD's cap is the recent wPrime world record that the Ryzen 9 3900X managed to wrestle from Intel's i9-7920X. The record was set by Australian overclocker "jordan.hyde99" as verified by HWbot.

The Ryzen 9 3900X and i9-7920X are both 12-core, 24 thread parts. The former is based on AMD's most recent Zen 2 microarchitecture and comes equipped with a 3.8 GHz base clock and a 4.6 GHz boost clock, while the latter is a Skylake derivative with a 2.9 GHz and 4.4 GHz base and boost clock, respectively.
The Ryzen 9 3900X was overclocked to 5,625 MHz to complete a Wprime 1024M benchmark run in 35 seconds and 517 milliseconds. Comparatively, the i9-7920X was overclocked to 5,955 MHz to complete the same benchmark pass in 35 seconds and 693 milliseconds.

While the win may seem marginal, winning only by a matter of milliseconds, the fact that the Ryzen 9 3900X could do so at a lower frequency is further testament to the IPC improvements of Zen 2.

The fight between AMD and Intel for processor market share seems to be getting extremely close, with PassMark reporting that AMD now has 40% of the market – a level of success that the company hasn't seen for over 14 years.
This is worrying news for Intel, which has enjoyed almost complete dominance of the CPU market for a while now.

The last time AMD had over 40% of the processor market share was back in 2006 – 14 years ago.
The chart only includes x86 processors, and not other chip architectures. However, due to the popularity of PassMark’s software, it still gives us a good idea of just how well AMD is doing.
As Wccftech explains, while Intel is still using the 14nm process (compared to AMD moving to 7nm), its processors maintain higher clock speeds than AMD’s products, which make them better gaming CPUs.

However, that may not be enough to combat AMD’s rise. You can check out PassMark’s AMD vs Intel Market Share chart, which is updated daily. Unlike the graph posted by Wccftech, this doesn’t show AMD above 40% just yet, but the company is clearly approaching that milestone.

Why it matters: We’ve been hearing news of AMD eroding Intel’s CPU market share for a while, and now another report suggests that Team Red is catching up on its rival. According to the results of a survey, 41 percent of participants now use AMD’s processors.

The report comes from Jon Peddie Research, which partnered with Antikythera Intelligence and Research, and the Wccftech website. It surveyed visitors to the site, asking questions about graphics cards, CPUs, motherboards, and virtual reality.
The October 2019 survey had 4,477 participants, producing 143,264 answers. You can read the full 55-page report here, but, as it’s aimed at those within the industry, you’ll have to hand over $9,000.
Wccftech revealed one interesting fact about the survey results: 41 percent of participants have AMD processors in their systems.

With Ryzen 4000 desktop processors expected to launch in the second half of 2020, the future is looking bright for AMD.

Advanced Micro Devices said it is adding three new 2nd Gen AMD Epyc server processors that can deliver up to 50% lower cost of ownership than rival Intel Xeon processors.

The chips are part of AMD’s attempt to grab technology leadership away from Intel, which has long dominated the server chip market. AMD has had an advantage lately with its high-performance Zen 2 cores designed to handle database, high-performance computing, and hyper-converged infrastructure workloads, Dan McNamara, senior vice president at AMD’s server business unit, said in a press briefing.
The three new processors are the AMD Epyc 7F32 (with 8 computing cores), Epyc 7F52 (16 cores) and EPYC 7F72 (24 cores).

The new 2nd Gen AMD EPYC 7Fx2 processors provide leading per-core performance and breakthrough value while adding the highest per-core performance of the Epyc family, AMD said.
