One of the concepts that best captures the quirky imagination of the world's largest online retailer is the Dash button, a handy (and kind of ridiculous) device you press to reorder stuff like dog food, bottled water or septic treatment powder.
But the usefulness and novelty of Dash buttons has waned over the years, and Amazon said Thursday that it had decided to stop selling the gadgets globally.

So what killed the Dash button's future? Well, by Amazon's telling, the device was a victim of its own success, since it helped nudge forward the concept of the connected home to what it is today.

The Dash button isn't nearly as necessary as it used to be. Today, plenty more appliances connect to the internet.
Plus, Amazon created virtual Dash buttons on its website and developed voice shopping through its Alexa voice assistant, which have both grown in popularity, Amazon says.

Amazon stopped selling the Dash button earlier this year; now they’re ending support for them all together. In an email to Dash users, Amazon says that Dash button devices will cease to function as of August 31st, 2019.
Why? They’re not selling any more of them, and too few people are using the ones that still exist. An Amazon rep told CNET that usage of the buttons “had significantly slowed” over the last few months.

If you’ve still got a Dash button around the house and don’t know what to do with it after the end of the month, Amazon is encouraging people to send the buttons into its recycling program (which covers the costs of shipping/disposal.)

First Amazon took away our Buttons. Now it’s broken the Wand.

In an email to users, Amazon announced that the Dash Wand will no longer be supported as of July 20, effectively killing the coolest product in its automated shopping arsenal. So now if you want to add products to your shopping list or cart, your only option is Alexa.
Amazon updated it in 2017 with Alexa and gave it away to Prime members, but without any updates or Whole Foods tie-in, the Dash Wand has languished. I don’t know how many people still use it, but my guess is very few.

If you’re among them, however, Amazon recommends deactivating your Wand before disposing of it.

A pocketable scanner that you could take to Whole Foods and automatically check out without waiting in line would have been a very cool benefit for Prime members, but it appears as though that day will never come. In my review at the time, I said the Dash Wand “seems built for a future that hasn’t yet arrived,” and unfortunately it seems as though it never will.

Last year Amazon stopped selling with the physical Dash buttons that let you instantly order things like toilet paper and mac and cheese. Now that the Wand is gone [...]
