Amazon starts preparations to launch in Sweden

Amazon.com Inc has started preparations to launch in Sweden, marking its first step to establish a local presence in a Nordic country.

Swedish customers can already shop on Amazon through its websites in other European countries such as Germany, and get their purchases shipped to the country, but this often meant paying high delivery charges.

“We are optimistic that, by focusing on the things we believe customers will place the greatest emphasis on - low prices, a wide range and fast deliveries - we will eventually be able to win the trust of Swedish customers,” Alex Ootes, vice president for EU Expansion at Amazon, said on Tuesday,

Amazon did not say if it would create a warehouse or distribution hub in Sweden but Ootes said: “The next step is to introduce a complete retail offering in Sweden and that is what we plan to do now”.

The probable entry of Amazon into Sweden has been talked about for years and could represent a challenge to local players.
Daniel Ovin, senior analyst at Nordea, said that based on a report written in October autoparts, sporting goods and general merchandise would be the most exposed sectors after an Amazon entry in the Nordics.

Amazon announced Wednesday that it has launched its first Nordic online store in Sweden as the e-commerce giant looks to expand further across the European continent.

Citizens in Sweden will now be able to order products through Amazon.se instead of having to make purchases via Amazon stores in other European countries including the British store (Amazon.co.uk) or the German store (Amazon.de), where they were shown a limited selection of products and incurred high delivery fees.

Amazon Vice President for European Expansion, Alex Ootes, said in a statement that Amazon.se will feature over 150 million products including tens of thousands from Swedish businesses.

“We will continue to work hard to earn the trust of Swedish customers by growing our product range, ensuring low prices, and providing a convenient and trusted shopping experience,” said Ootes.

The launch got off to a bit of a bad start. Amazon used the Argentinian flag instead of the Swedish flag in the “choose your location” section and a frying pan was listed as a woman’s item.
Amazon was also criticized for wrongly translating some product descriptions.

It was also launched in The Netherlands this year, but I haven't bought anything yet. Also, it's still not clear if products are bought directly from Amazon or from some other shop. I assume they will clearly indicate if you buy from a third party?

Amazon’s launch of a Swedish retail site, its first in the Nordics, has caused embarrassment at the e-commerce company after a series of errors led to confusing, nonsensical and occasionally vulgar product listings scattered across the catalogue...

To start with, Amazon chose the wrong flag: the Argentine flag appeared where the Swedish flag should have been placed on the country picker...

Other problems were more understandable, thanks to some disastrous automatic translation...Products featuring cats were hit particularly hard, with the lewd double meaning of the word “****” leading to a T-shirt with a cat on it being labelled with an vulgar Swedish term for '******'..."

The company currently has about 44 per cent of the e-commerce market in the US, and about 30 per cent in the UK and Germany. If it could achieve the same levels in Sweden, local rivals like CDON risk being wiped off the map.

Väliharju is betting on CDON’s closer relationships with retailers in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland.
"Amazon is very good at taking care of the consumers, but what we hear from our merchants is that they’re not as good at dealing with merchant needs. And we would like to be the merchants’ best friend,” he says.
