Amazon Joins Tech’s Great Quantum Computing Race
The company’s AWS unit will allow customers to tap quantum machines from three startups

On Monday, the company said it would widen its cloud menu to include access to quantum computers—Amazon’s first big commitment to a technology rivals IBM and Google say will transform computers’ impact on businesses and society.

Starting this month, customers will be able to access quantum hardware via Amazon’s cloud platform from three startups: D-Wave Systems, IonQ, and Rigetti Computing. The quantum computing service is called Braket, after a notation used in quantum physics, and also includes quantum programming and simulation tools.
Amazon is also starting a consulting group to help customers identify how quantum computing could help their businesses.

“Having multiple machines and technologies available is much better than forcing someone down a single choice for hardware or software,” Vass of Amazon says—in the same way that the company offers cloud customers many different processor and software choices.
Longer term, Amazon’s menu of quantum offerings could include quantum processors of its own.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the general availability of its quantum computing service today. Called Amazon Braket, the service provides quantum computing simulators running on Amazon EC2 instances as well as remote access to real quantum hardware. These include superconducting quantum annealers from D-Wave, trapped ion processors from IonQ, and superconducting quantum processors from Rigetti.

In many ways, Amazon Braket is similar to IBM Q. Both feature quantum computing simulators and access to quantum hardware.
Currently, Amazon Braket is available in US East (N. Virginia), US West (N. California), and US West (Oregon) AWS Regions. Availability is set to expand to other regions in the future. Pricing is dissected into two factors — per shot and per task — depending upon the choice of quantum hardware.

AWS announces two substantial updates to Amazon Braket

Back in August, Amazon Braket hit general availability. The service provides remote access to quantum computing simulators and real quantum hardware hosted on the cloud. Since then, it's been integrated into high-end services like Orquestra to enable better quantum software development, especially for enterprise users.

Building on this, AWS announced today that Amazon Braket will now support PennyLane, which is an open-source software framework for hybrid quantum computing and quantum machine learning applications.

Furthermore, AWS has expanded the choice of simulators available on Braket as well. In addition to the state vector simulator, which could simulate a 34-qubit quantum computer, the newly added tensor network simulator can simulate up to 50 qubits for certain circuits.
Overall, this increased power should let customers explore and optimize quantum algorithms at a larger qubit scale.
