According to the outlet, Amazon is planning to push Prime Day back by at least a month.
This news might seem insignificant to those who don't participate in the Prime Day "festivities," but for Amazon, it's quite the opposite. The company is reportedly expecting to take at least a $100 million revenue hit due to the delay.

At worst, Amazon may lose up to $300 million, but the lower $100 million figure is more "likely."

Once upon a time, Black Friday was America’s big shopping day, but as online shopping outpaced brick-and-mortar stores and the allure of standing outside a big-box retailer in the freezing cold for hours faded, Amazon Prime Day took over.
Now the annual e-commerce holiday is COVID-19’s latest victim.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is rescheduling its spendapalooza from the summer to September. The switch will help the Seattle-based giant offer more types of merchandise and deliver those goods faster.

“What they’re really trying to do is say, ‘Prime Day is really an important event and puts an enormous amount of stress on (us). We want to be ready for it,'” said Mark Cohen, director of retail studies at the Columbia Business School.

Even with delayed date, demand on Prime Day might be muted, as Americans—unemployed or fearful of losing their jobs—cut back on their shopping.

“The Amazon brand has been enhanced markedly by the presence of these days, and they want the Amazon brand to be viewed as favorably as it has been,” Cohen explained. “They don’t want to disappoint people. They’re probably pushing it, because they can’t deliver what they believe customers expect from them until they reset.”

Amazon has set a date for its “Summer Sale” event that’s designed to provide a boost for sellers feeling the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and the delay of the company’s annual Prime Day event.

The company sent a notice to sellers early Tuesday informing them that it’s hosting a “Fashion Summer Sale Event” on June 22, according to a document viewed by CNBC. The notice says that participation in the promotional event is by “invitation only” and it’s expected to run anywhere from seven to 10 days long.

“We are having the Biggest Summer Sale event to drive excitement and jump-start sales,” the notice states. “To drive customer engagement, we are asking for your participation.”

Amazon is postponing its marquee shopping event Prime Day until at least early October.

The company had previously targeted September as the potential timing for Prime Day, but on Wednesday, Amazon informed third-party sellers that the date could be pushed back another month, according to the email, which was viewed by CNBC and first reported by Business Insider.

“A definitive date will be announced as we get closer to the event,” the email states. “We are looking forward to seeing submissions that offer the most delight to customers during one of the biggest shopping days of the year, Prime Day!”

Update, July 21, 2020 (6AM ET): It’s official. Amazon has confirmed that Prime Day will be delayed in the US but not canceled entirely.

Earlier this month, reports pointed to an October date for Amazon’s sales holiday. Now, a report by TechCrunch states that it will take place “later this year” for US shoppers. It hasn’t however provided a revised date.
If you’re in India though, there’s some good news. Prime Day in that country will kick off from midnight on August 6 until August 7. The fate of Prime Day in other global markets remains unknown.

Prime Day is one of the biggest sales events for Amazon globally. In India, the e-commerce giant has historically sold more goods during sales events scheduled around the festival of Diwali, which is when local residents peak their spendings.
