Personal information from 1.1 million RedMart accounts was stolen from e-commerce platform Lazada and sold online in a data breach.
A Lazada spokesperson confirmed this on Friday (Oct 30).

CNA had earlier come across an online forum which was purportedly selling personal data from various e-commerce sites around the world, including Lazada.
The site claimed to have information like names, phone numbers and partial credit card numbers from about 1.1 million users.

"Our cybersecurity team discovered an individual claiming to be in possession of a RedMart customer database taken from a legacy RedMart system no longer in use by the company," a spokesperson from Lazada said in a statement, referring to the online supermarket platform it acquired in 2016.
Lazada added that the information stolen was last updated in March 2019, and the affected RedMart-only database is not linked to any Lazada database.

A spokesperson for the Personal Data Protection Commission said it is aware of the incident and is investigating.

Alibaba-owned e-commerce giants Lazada revealed on Friday that it had suffered a data hack of more than 13 million accounts in Thailand, triggering worries of compromised financial data and privacy details.
The e-commerce firm said that up to 12.2 million names, 9.3 million phone numbers and 1.2 million emails were compromised in the hack.

The data breach comes just weeks after 1.1 million accounts were hacked in Singapore where the company is based.

Lazada said on Friday in a statement that it was working closely with authorities in trying to protect customer data and a meeting between company representatives and the Thai digital ministry is set for early next week.

[Update-1] Lazada blames third party for data leak; leak affects Shopee and Line as well, Lazada says

Following reports that Alibaba-owned e-commerce giants Lazada had suffered a data hack, the company said on Saturday that the leak was from a third-party provider and not in-house servers.

“Our investigation shows that the leak did not come from Lazada but a third-party provider,” Pimchaya Boonyarathapan, a Lazada public relations official, told Thai Enquirer.
When asked who was the third party provider, the rep said she did not know.

Lazada said that it was not the only company affected by the hack and said that Line and Shopee were implicated as well.
The e-commerce firm said in a statement that it was “a victim” and that data protection and privacy was a “top priority.”

Lazada denies being behind data leak

Online retail operator, Lazada, insisted on Friday it was not responsible for leaking any online shoppers' data following a report claiming that about 13 million records from Lazada Thailand were being offered for sale on an underground trading forum.
The company also said it had strictly complied with data protection rules and always placed emphasis on data privacy.
