Algeria Ranked ‘Least Cyber-Secure’ Country in the World, Japan ‘Most Cyber-Secure’

A new study from Comparitech has named Algeria the ‘least cyber-secure’ nation in the world, whilst Japan has been ranked the ‘most cyber-secure.’

Comparitech was quick to point out that it found huge variances in a number of the categories and that there was no country that came ‘top of the class’ across the board. However, “there were some countries that lacked significantly in a variety of areas and others who outperformed the majority of countries,” the company said.

Speaking to Infosecurity, Paul Bischoff, privacy advocate at Comparitech, said the report findings are evidence that, generally, developed countries have better cybersecurity than developing ones.
“The reason might be because people in developing countries are less experienced with the internet and the devices they use to access it. They have less awareness of cybersecurity threats [...]"

With so much of our information (including incredibly personal data) being found online, cybersecurity is of the utmost importance.

So just where in the world are you cyber safe – if anywhere?

Our study looked at 60 countries and found huge variances in a number of categories, from malware rates to cybersecurity-related legislation. In fact, not one country is “top of the class” across the board. All of the countries we analyzed could do with some significant improvements.

However, there were some countries that lacked significantly in a variety of areas and others who outperformed the majority of countries. So with that in mind, we’ve created rankings for these 60 countries, from the least cyber safe to the most cyber safe.

We considered seven criteria, each of which had equal weight in our overall score. These were:

The percentage of mobiles infected with malware – software designed to gain unauthorized access to, destroy, or disrupt a device’s system

The percentage of computers infected with malware – software designed to gain unauthorized access to, destroy, or disrupt a computer’s system

The number of financial malware attacks – malicious programs created to steal a user’s money from the bank account on their computer system

The percentage of telnet attacks (by originating country) – the technique used by cybercriminals to get people to download a variety of malware types

The percentage of attacks by cryptominers – software that’s developed to take over a user’s computer and use its resources to mine currency (without the user’s permission)

With so much of our personal data stored online, cybersecurity is of the utmost importance.
So just where in the world are you cyber safe, if anywhere?

Last year, our study looked at 60 countries and found huge differences in a number of categories, from malware rates to cybersecurity-related legislation. In fact, not one country was “top of the class” across the board. All of the countries we analyzed needed some significant improvements.

We ranked these 60 countries from the least cyber safe to the most cyber safe based on seven criteria: [...]
We added 16 new countries to the study thanks to more data becoming available. This means countries are now ranked from one to 76 with one being the least cyber-secure country and 76 being the most cyber-secure country.

What can we take away from these findings?
It is encouraging to see that most countries have improved overall. No country dominates every category, so every country still has room for improvement. Whether they need to strengthen cybersecurity legislation or users need better protection on their computers and smartphones, there’s still a long way to go.

Plus, as the landscape of cybersecurity constantly changes (cryptominers are growing in prevalence, for example), countries need to try and get one step ahead of cybercriminals.

Which is the least cyber-secure country in the world?
According to our study, Algeria is still the least cyber-secure country in the world despite its score improving slightly.
Which is the most cyber-secure country in the world?
Our findings revealed Denmark to be the most cyber-secure country in the world, taking over from Japan, which dropped four places to the fifth most cyber-secure country.

Australia Climbs 12 Positions High in Cybersecurity Rankings

A study on global comparison of cybersecurity defenses ranked Australia as the world’s 15th secure country. According to security research firm Comparitech, Australia climbed 12 positions in its latest cybersecurity ranking report.

Comparitech stated that it found improvement in Australia’s cybersecurity readiness with an overall score of 13.95 when compared to the previous year’s 16.34 (lower scores represent better ranking).
It’s found that 4.86% of mobiles in Australia were infected due to malware attacks, which is twice the rate of higher-ranked countries like Denmark, Turkey, Norway, and Croatia.

Australia has taken some recent initiatives to increase its cyber capabilities. In January, it added a new cybersecurity innovation node to AustCyber (Australian Cyber Security Growth Network).

Tasmania’s Cybersecurity Innovation Node, which was launched in Launceston on January 30, 2020, is the new addition to AustCyber, which is a national network of cybersecurity innovation nodes. AustCyber nodes are designed to strengthen and accelerate Australia’s cyber capabilities and technical innovation.
AustCyber is a non-profit organization established by the Australian Government, under its roadmap for growing a cybersecurity sector for Australia at par with its international counterparts.
